Young Indian opener Abhishek Sharma recently shared his thoughts on his close friendship with Shubman Gill, as India’s white-ball vice-captain has been making rapid strides to prominence in Indian cricket.

Notably, they recently played together for Team India on the Zimbabwe tour. Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Gill, the left-handed batter has emphasized that their bond remains as strong as ever, even as the Gujarat Titans (GT) captain’s career has taken off.

Abhishek Sharma reveals all about his friendship with Shubman Gill

Both Sharma and Gill have shared a unique camaraderie since their under-12 days, having been roommates and part of a close-knit group during their formative years. The 23-year-old batter further revealed that despite Gill’s busy schedule with the Indian cricket team, their conversations often drift back to their childhood memories.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder acknowledged that Gill is busier now thanks to his professional commitments, due to which they couldn’t talk very frequently, but the essence of their bond remains the same.

He also expressed confidence that his relationship and friendship would remain unchanged irrespective of the test of time and the demands of their respective careers. Whether on or off the field, Sharma feels that their connection will remain solid.

Abhishek Sharma told Manjot Kalra, “Our bond is still the same. However, he is very busy now, but whenever we meet, we talk about our childhood. As you know, we used to be roommates. We used to be a group. These things are still the same. I don't think he has changed a bit. He is still the same. He is always open-minded. He is always close to me. We still talk a lot. Obviously, he is playing for the Indian team.

Whenever we play together, I feel like the bond will remain the same. I don't think it will ever change. Some things changed a little bit, and I know he is busy. Our matches are also going on. Even if we don't talk to each other, even if we do talk, I don't think there will be any difference. Like we used to do before, it will remain the same."

Shubman Gill appointed as India's vice-captain while Abhishek Sharma dropped from the team for the Sri Lanka tour

Notably, Shubman Gill has been recently named Team India’s vice-captain in ODI and T20I cricket, while Suryakumar Yadav was appointed T20I captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the shortest format of the game following the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph.

On the other hand, Abhishek Sharma was overlooked for India’s upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka, despite the opener smashing a T20I century in his debut series in Zimbabwe earlier this month.

Many former cricketers, including Harbhajan Singh and Wasim Jaffer, have expressed their surprise over Abhishek’s snub for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka. They slammed the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for dropping Sharma.

The Indian team already reached Colombo for the six-match white-ball series against Sri Lanka, starting with the first T20I on July 27. It will be India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir,’s first assignment at the office and Surya’s first series as a full-time captain in T20I cricket.
