Shubman Gill embarrassed on world stage with shambolic record
PC: X

Indian skipper Shubman Gill took over the captaincy of the Indian side from Rohit Sharma ahead of the England Test series, but has yet to win a single toss, which sets an embarrassing record in the history of Test cricket.

Shubman Gill led by example in the India vs England series, as India levelled the series. India won the historic games at the iconic Edgbaston Stadium for the first time, and then they won the final Test at The Oval.

The India vs West Indies Test series would mark the second red-ball series under Gill's captaincy. The Indian batter has been in some unstoppable form in Test cricket, and is expected to continue it in the latest home series.

Shubman Gill is yet to win a single toss as the Indian Test skipper

Ever since Shubman Gill took over as the skipper of the Indian side, Gill has never won a single toss as India's Test captain. Gill's fortune doesn't favour him much in such instances, as he does not hold a very impressive record in tosses even for the Gujarat Titans.

However, Gill lost all 5 tosses in the England series and now has lost his 6th consecutive toss in a row. Gill, however, as the skipper, has won 2 matches and one Test ended in a draw in the last 5 games he appeared in.

Contrary to his red-ball toss form, he has won 4 out of the 5 tosses as the T20I captain for India. Though this toss did not affect him much, since they got to bowl first on this occasion, a much-desired choice.

After an unconvincing Asia Cup, Shubman Gill is hopeful to sink into rhythm in the Test series

Shubman Gill made his long-awaited return to the Indian T20I side in the Asia Cup 2025. The batter missed the ICC T20 World Cup of 2024, but is considered a likely opener for the next edition of the T20 World Cup since his name has often been promoted as India's most reliable option for Suryakumar Yadav's replacement as the T20I skipper.

Gill, despite his return to the top of the Indian batting order, could not perform very well, with his best score of 47 in the Asia Cup, which came against Pakistan during the Super-4 chase.

However, since his return to India, he has been toiling hard at the nets and is expected to find his lost rhythm at his favourite venue, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the home ground of the Gujarat Titans.

Will Shubman Gill be rested for the Australia tour, citing his excessive workload?

Shubman Gill played in the India tour of England and was also part of India's victorious campaign at the Asia Cup, and played in all 7 matches of the season. He is next featuring in the Test series against the West Indies.

The Australia white-ball series follows immediately, while it will be further followed by a Test series against South Africa. He will be back to lead the Indian side against South Africa, but might be considered for dropping from the Australia tour. This step might be taken to manage his workload in the busy international calendar.
