Shubman Gill reached the three-figure mark in just 159 balls. His knock consisted of 14 fours and 3 sixes. The knock was a special one considering the other Punjab batters were dismissed for low scores.
However, Gill stayed at one end and showed why he is so highly regarded in the Indian cricketing circles. He had scored more than half of his team's runs on his way to a brilliant century.
Last fifty off 40 balls
Shubman Gill reached his fifty off 119 balls but scored the next fifty runs in just 40 deliveries. He switched gears smoothly after completing his half-century and made sure that his team reached a respectable score in the second innings
He reached his hundred with a flick through the leg-side for two runs Gill soaked in the applause from the limited spectators at the ground and his teammates and raised his bat to complete a satisfying hundred.
However, the Punjab captain could not carry on with his innings and was dismissed for 102 off 171 balls with 14 fours and 3 sixes by the legspinner Shreyas Gopal. The talented right-hander from Punjab showed tremendous temperament on his way to a memorable century.
Gill's knock came in an innings where Punjab's next best score turned out to be 27 by Mayank Markande. After the fall of Gill's wicket, Punjab's innings could not last longer and they were shot out for 213, thus losing the match by a massive margin of an innings and 207 runs.
Important knock for Shubman Gill
While Shubman Gill's knock didn't effect the outcome of the match, it was an important knock for him. This knock will give him loads of confidence ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, where he will be India's vice-captain.
The 25-year-old recently endured a tough time in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where he scored 93 runs in three Tests at an average of 18.60. After India's defeat in the Test series in Australia, the BCCI made it compulsory for every player to play domestic cricket whenever they have the window.
Gill immediately went back to the basics and marked his return to form. After the Champions Trophy, he will lead Gujarat Titans in the IPL and is likely to be selected for India's overseas Test tour of England.
