TR Shubman Gill CENTURY
PC: X

Indian skipper Shubman Gill has reached another three-figure score in the longest format of the game. This marks Gill's tenth Test hundred, the most by any Indian cricketer in the history of the World Test Championship, and his fifth hundred in 7 Tests after being named the skipper of the Indian team.

Shubman Gill is leading from the front as India dominate the West Indies on home turf at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Though initially being held responsible for having been the root cause behind the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal earlier this morning, Gill kept his nerve and got to his tenth Test hundred.

India scored a mammoth 518 at the loss of 5 wickets in their innings before declaring. Dhruv Jurel, the centurion from the previous game, was dismissed for 44 by the West Indian skipper, and the Indians decided to call it an end, with Shubman Gill not out on an unbeaten 129*.

Shubman Gill scripts WTC history for India with an iconic hundred

Day 1 of the Second Test was ruled by Yashasvi Jaiswal as he dominated with a mammoth 173 on home soil and received much acclaim for his terrific innings, which belittled the West Indian bowlers. Shubman Gill had just started off his innings during the final session on Day 1.

However, after Jaiswal's early run-out, it was Gill who took command of the Indian innings on Day 2 and scored a stunning hundred, building on partnerships with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel. The two batters missed out on their half-centuries after being dismissed in the fearful 40s.

This hundred marked Shubman Gill's 5th Hundred as the Captain of the Indian team and has come within a span of just 7 Test matches. Shubman, with his 10th Test hundred, has now surpassed former captain Rohit Sharma (9 hundreds) for having scored the most Test hundreds in the history of the ICC World Test Championship, which was started in 2019.

Gill equals Virat Kohli in a unique captaincy record

Alongside surpassing the former skipper, Shubman Gill has also earned a name for himself in the list of legends. He has now equalled Virat Kohli's record of most tons for India in a year as the Test captain.

Kohli had formerly scored 5 centuries each as India's Test skipper back in 2017 and 2018, having played 16 and 24 innings, respectively. Gill too has reached 5 tons but in just 12 innings and is yet to play the Test series against South Africa this year.

Shubman Gill nearly surpassed Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing record of most runs by an Indian skipper on English soil; however, he missed it by a whisker. This time around, as well, he is only behind Sunil Gavaskar on the list of Indian Captains to have reached 5 Test hundreds in the least number of innings.

While Gavaskar holds the record with just 10 innings under his belt, Gill surpassed Virat Kohli, who had reached the same feat in 18 Test innings.
