India are set to tour Australia for a white-ball series, featuring three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and five T20I matches, beginning on Sunday, October 19. However, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will miss the tour due to injuries, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo.
The Indian squad for the upcoming white-ball series in Australia is expected to be announced on October 4. While several players are likely to return, some could miss out. Selectors will also consider the workload of Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah, who may be rested for the upcoming series against Australia.
Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah Could Be Rested for the Australia Tour Due to...
According to ESPNcricinfo, Shubman Gill is expected to be rested for the upcoming ODI series in Australia. The selectors want to manage his workload following a busy schedule, including the 2025 Asia Cup and the ongoing two-Test series against the West Indies.
India will play three ODIs against Australia within a tight six-day window, with just a one-day break between the final two matches. This short turnaround, combined with travel demands and the conclusion of the second West Indies Test in Delhi, could make resting Gill a precautionary measure.
Jasprit Bumrah also participated in the Asia Cup and is part of India’s Test squad. Bumrah has made himself available for both matches. With another home Test against South Africa in November, managing players’ workload has become a priority for the selectors.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhishek Sharma Poised to Fill Shubman Gill’s Spot
The selectors will have to pick a new opening partner for Rohit Sharma if Shubman Gill is rested for India’s upcoming ODIs. Meanwhile, Gill has been India’s top run-scorer in 2025, accumulating 447 runs in eight matches, followed closely by Shreyas Iyer with 424 runs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is a strong contender to replace Shubman Gill, as he was part of India’s provisional squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 before being dropped.
Abhishek Sharma could also challenge for the spot, especially given his excellent form in T20Is and his left-arm spin option. He was asked to feature in two List-A matches against Australia A to gauge his readiness for ODIs.
Jaiswal and Abhishek could open at the top in T20Is, providing India with fresh options at the top of the order.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Expected to Feature in ODI Squad
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have retired from Tests and T20Is, are expected to feature in India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia. The team will play eight white-ball matches, starting with three ODIs from October 19, followed by five T20I matches.
The five-match T20I series will begin on October 29. According to reports, the T20I squad is likely to be announced together with the ODI lineup.
Kohli and Rohit’s inclusion ends speculation about their participation in the 50-over format, ensuring India has experienced leadership and firepower for the series.
