This is good, proactive batting from the India captain - Ricky Ponting
Speaking on Sky Sports, the legendary Australian skipper Ricky Ponting lavished rich praise on Shubman Gill for batting with a Joe Root-like approach in the first innings of the Oval Test match.
Ricky Ponting highlighted how the Indian skipper took "certain modes of dismissal out of the equation" and showed proactive batting. He elaborated:
“Joe Root spoke last week about taking certain modes of dismissal out of the equation. That is what Gill is trying to do here, by batting so far out of his crease.
"He has identified Woakes is going after him with lbw so if he takes a stride forward, anything that hits him on the pad might be outside the line.
"It also puts Woakes off his length as the bowler now needs to drag it back and balls may now go over the stumps. This is good, proactive batting from the India captain."
