Former Australian batter Greg Chappell shared his thoughts on young Indian batter Shubman Gill ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25 series). Greg Chappell said that the Australian team, led by Pat Cummins, would consider Gill one of the weak links in the Indian Test side.
Shubman last played for India during the recent three-match Test series against New Zealand, where the hosts suffered an unexpected whitewash. The right-handed batter missed the first match due to a stiff neck. He scored 144 runs in the remaining two Test matches at a decent average of 36.
Shubman Gill Is A Very Good Player - Greg Chappell
In a conversation with Boria Majumdar, Greg Chappell hailed Shubman Gill as a talented player, adding that he has the ability to make runs at the Test level. However, Chappell said that Australia might consider Gill as one of the weak links in the Indian side.
"He's (Shubman Gill) a very good player, no doubt about it. Anybody who plays for India has got some serious talent, and they wouldn't have got that far if they didn't," Chappell said.
"I think it's sometimes a little bit dangerous to extrapolate white-ball form into red-ball form. Gill has the ability to make runs at Test level, and it'll be interesting to see how he goes about it. I would think that the Australians would consider him one of the weak links in the Indian side," he added.
Whether Shubman Gill Thinks He's A Good Player - Greg Chappell
Greg Chappell warned Australia not to underestimate Shubman Gill, calling it very dangerous. He emphasized that anyone who plays for India is a very good and talented player. Chappell added that Gill needs to believe in himself to succeed in Test cricket without being distracted by outside noise.
"Now, that's very dangerous because, as I say, anyone who plays for India is a very, very good player and a very talented player. So a big part of it will be whether Shubman Gill thinks he's a good player," Chappell further stated.
"If he believes he's a good player and he thinks he's in good form and can come out and bat with some confidence, then he'll do very well. What counts is whether he thinks he's good enough or not. And if he thinks he's good enough, he'll be fine. But if he has any doubt, then Test cricket will be too hard for him."
Shubman Gill Made His Test Debut During BGT 2020-21 Series
The 25-year-old cricketer made his Test debut for India during the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21. He scored 91 runs in the second innings of India's historic victory at the Gabba in Brisbane. Overall, he has scored 1,800 runs in 29 Tests at an average of 36.73, including five centuries and seven fifties.
Gill needs to score runs in the first match to gain confidence and dominate the Australian bowling attack in the challenging conditions. The first Test will commence at the Perth Stadium on November 22. If Rohit misses the series opener, Gill will have more responsibility to carry the Indian batting lineup.
