Indian batsman Shubman Gill has been the major highlight of the Indian team in the year 2023. Gill was the top run scorer in the year with 2154 runs from 48 matches. Gill scored a total of 7 hundreds in the whole year and was also the leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League 2023. For the same, Gill was adjudged as the ‘Cricketer of the Year’ at the Naman Awards 2024. Gill received the Polly Umrigar Award for the year 2022-23.
The Naman Awards is BCCI’s annual award ceremony to honor the achievements of the Indian players. The award ceremony returned after a gap of four years after 2020 and was held in Hyderabad ahead of the IND vs ENG first Test.
Shubman Gill was overwhelmed after receiving the ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award and posted for the same on his official Instagram handle. Gill in his caption talked about his cricket journey and revealed that it is so much nostalgia. Gill stated that he was 14 when he met his cricketing idols and now is playing with them in the same team. Shubman added that seeing Virat Kohli win the ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award is something that he will never forget.

Shubman Gill wrote, “So much nostalgia, from coming here when i was 14 and meeting my idols and legends for the first time. Watching Virat bhai win cricketer of the year was something I would never forget. Pure motivation for me to go a step further and give everything for my country this year.”
Shubman Gill now is also set to lead for the first time in his cricketing career. Gill will be captaining Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2024, after the departure of Hardik Pandya. Shubman Gill also showcased a decent performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 and scored 354 runs from 9 games and his highest score of 92 runs.
Shubman Gill has proved himself pretty well in the ODI and the T20I format but is yet to give up his best in the Test format. Gill, who achieved his first-ever hundred in the Test format in December of last year, has not been able to maintain the same momentum. Since making his Test debut in the IND vs. AUS Test series in 2021, Gill has been able to get starts but has not been able to convert those into significant runs.
Getting back to his Indian Premier League career, Shubman Gill has played a total of 91 matches and has scored 2790 runs at an average of 37.70. Gill has slammed 3 centuries followed by 18 half-centuries. Shubman Gill scored 890 runs from 16 games in IPL 2023 and won the orange cap.
However, as he will move forward in his career, he will also start to get responsibilities. Gill is seen as captaincy material and is being groomed for the same by his senior players. Gill is eyed as a successor of Virat Kohli and the cricket experts believe that he will take forward Virat’s legacy.
Shubman Gill will be looking forward to proving himself in the Test format during the IND vs ENG Test series starting from January 25.
