Shubman Gill Named Gujarat Titans Captain Minutes After Hardik Pandya’s Departure

Gujarat Titans named Shubman Gill as the new skipper of the team after Hardik Pandya’s ouster. Gujarat Titans shared a post on X (Twitter) to confirm the news. Hardik Pandya has been traded to Mumbai Indians.

Pandya has joined his previous team Mumbai Indians in what can be dubbed as one of the biggest trades in IPL history. On Monday, BCCI officially released a statement informing that Hardik Pandya has moved to Mumbai Indians.

Shubman Gill Named Gujarat Titans Skipper

After Hardik Pandya’s exit, Shubman Gill has been named as the new skipper of Gujarat Titans. Hence, the right-handed batsman will lead the side in IPL 2024. GT shared a short video of Shubman Gill on Twitter to announce his arrival as the new skipper. Have a look at the video below.

After becoming the captain, Gill said that he was delighted to assume the captaincy and looks forward to leading the team after two exceptional seasons.

“I am delighted and proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket,” he said. 

The news of Hardik Pandya’s ouster from Gujarat Titans had been doing the rounds for a few days. Pandya had revealed his wish to join his former franchise. Mumbai Indians dropped Jofra Archer from the squad and traded Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore to buy Pandya from GT in an all-cash trade.

Notably, MI had no funds left to grab Pandya into their squad. Trading Cameron Green helped MI to generate a lot of funds as they bought Green for Rs. 17.5 crore during the previous auction. Releasing Jofra Archer gave them Rs. 8 crore.

Shubman Gill Scripts New Chapter In GT Franchise

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill will script the new chapter in Gujarat Titans under his leadership from the next season. In IPL 2023, Shubman Gill showcased a marvelous form in the tournament, smashing 890 runs to win the orange cap. He slammed 3 centuries and 4 half-centuries.

Gujarat Titans have had a stunning show in the last two seasons under skipper Hardik Pandya. GT won the title in the debut edition in 2022. In the 2023 season, they ended as runners-up after losing a nail-biting final to Chennai Super Kings. Now, Gill has the responsibility to run the franchise with the same momentum in the IPL 2024 season.
