Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill, who was handed the Test captaincy after BCCI urged Rohit Sharma to retire from the red-ball format due to his concerning form, has been revealed to have pleaded with Virat Kohli to stay with the Indian team and reverse his retirement in the longest format of the game; however, the veteran denied it, as he had already made up his mind.
Midway through the IPL, when Rohit Sharma, the Indian veteran, looked in very fine touch, he suddenly announced his retirement from the longest format of the game; as per reports, the BCCI had pressured Sharma to take this step ahead of the series in England.
However, the reports claimed that only Rohit was not backed in red-ball cricket; however, Virat Kohli, the veteran cricketer, was urged by many BCCI officials, the Indian management, and even by former cricketers to continue with the format. He, however, had made up his mind and announced his Test retirement just a few days after the former skipper.
Shubman Gill pleaded with Kohli to reverse retirement from Test cricket - Huge revelation made
After Virat Kohli followed Rohit's footsteps to retire from the longest format of the game, several cricket pundits as well as Indian management had openly urged him to stay; however, as per the latest revelations made by Rohit Juglan, the RevSportz reporter, the new Indian captain, Shubman Gill, had also talked with Kohli to convince him otherwise.
Juglan claims, "The BCCI wanted Rohit Sharma to leave red-ball cricket; however, they, alongside the skipper Shubman Gill, wanted Virat Kohli to play Test cricket. Gill was the last man to communicate with Virat Kohli, urging him to play."
However, it has also been confirmed that Virat Kohli, the veteran Indian cricketer, by that time had already made up his mind to leave the longest format, a format he once loved the most.
Shubman Gill stepped into the big shoes of Virat Kohli in England
In the England tour for the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy, India looked amateurish with the two veterans having retired at the same time, while this was the first Test series in over a decade that India was playing without Ravichandran Ashwin, the legendary spinner.
India had relatively younger players with a few debutants as well. Under such a scenario, someone had to fill the voids of the legendary cricketers; it was then that KL Rahul stepped in as a seasoned opener, while Gill slotted himself into the no. 4 spot.
Shubman was unstoppable in the new role, as he even left Kohli praising him by the end of the series. He amassed 754 runs in the 5 matches with an average of 75+ and four big hundreds, with a historic 269 at Edgbaston.
Gill replaced Rohit in Tests and led by example
After being named the new and young skipper, the 25-year-old Haryana boy did not lose confidence; rather, the added responsibility seemed to have led to his rise in commanding form with the bat.
Having led the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Shubman Gill never looked like an amateur skipper despite stepping into the big shoes of two-time ICC tournament-winning skipper Rohit Sharma.
He led by example, as he not only scored a pile of runs but also led the team to crucial wins at Birmingham and then at The Oval, a series-levelling win that finally drew the series 2-2 in the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy.
