Shubman Gill puts rest to all the questions - RP Singh feels batter silenced the critics
Shubman Gill was in terrible form in the past few months and his place in the red-ball format was being questioned heavily after his graph was followed by a lean patch. However, a century against England in the second innings of the second Test at Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam (Vizag) changed everyone’s opinion regarding the youngster. Shubman Gill smashed his third Test century scoring 104 off 147 deliveries.
Former Indian pacer RP Singh reckons Shubman Gill has put a rest to all the questions arising against his position in the squad with this innings. He acknowledged the pressure that was building on the young batter because of the lean patch and also talked about the importance of this innings in Shubman Gill’s career. Shubman Gill will now think that he is back in form and will have to maintain consistency to cement his place and put a full stop to all the questions being raised against him regarding his place in the squad.
“The pressure was building on Shubman Gill, questions were also being raised regarding his batting and he also played some shots that were a bothering point. This century means a lot for Gill because now he will think that he has got back his form. Before this innings, his place in the team was also being questioned because the other opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, batted brilliantly and attracted a lot of eyes,” RP Singh said in a talkshow with CricBuzz.
“Whatever the questions were regarding Shubman Gill’s place in the team if he fails to deliver with the bat in the next few innings, he has rested some of those questions after his century today and his celebration shows how important this century is for the youngster.”

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal both played some brilliant cricket in the second Test as India has now given a 399-run target to England and it will not be easy for the visitors to chase this massive total against India in the last innings. India has already lost the first Test in Hyderabad by 28 runs and is now behind in the five-match series by 0-1. However, they are in the driving seat in Vizag and are looking to level the series 1-1 and then take the momentum forward to win the series.
India has not lost a Test series at home since 2012 and has won 16 consecutive Test series in home conditions since 2012 when England defeated them 2-1 under Alastair Cook’s leadership. The hosts will be looking to win the series again to take that count to 17 while England will be hoping to recreate the results of 2012. The second Test match is being played at Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam whereas the rest of the three Tests will be played at Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamsala respectively.
