India top-order batsman Shubman Gill said he had visualized playing an important knock against Pakistan, a night before the Men in Blue clashed against their arch-rivals in the Super 4 stages of Asia Cup 2023.
The Indian team led by Rohit Sharma, had met the Green Army, thrice last year with 2 of them coming at the continental championship itself. The 3rd meeting between the two Asian giants came during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the World's largest stadium in Ahmedabad.
In the first match between them in Asia Cup 2023, the match was abandoned due to extreme weather conditions in Colombo, and the spoils were equally shared. Then in their next meeting in the Super Fours, the Indians had claimed victory in a one-sided affair at the R Premadasa Stadium.
Rohit Sharma's men won the match by a huge margin of 228 runs as Pakistan were unable to chase down a mammoth target of 357 which they reached through the efforts of Rohit (56), Shubman Gill (58), Virat Kohli (122) and KL Rahul (112). The Men in Green were folded for just 128 runs through a 5-wicket haul from Kuldeep Yadav.
Shubman Gill had responded pretty well in only his second-ever match against Pakistan by scoring 58 off 52 balls, after getting out for just 10 runs against them in their Group A match.
But Gill could not keep up the same intensity when he came in front of the same opponents for the third time in over a month during the 50-over WC where India completed the double with a 7-wicket win.
Shubman Gill said he did not want to overthink before scoring his first 50 against Pakistan in Asia Cup
Shubman Gill recently revealed his mindset and game plan that he set for himself just a night before facing Pakistan in Asia Cup Super Fours.
The 24-year-old knew that he would face them up next during the WC on home soil and that's why he thought of expressing himself without much overthinking before the Super 4 clash. Gill revealed that he only wanted to bat however he felt like instead of thinking too much at the end of the day it worked for him.
The Fazilka-born batter had scored 58 at a strike rate of over 110 along with 10 fours to his name and also stitched a 121-run partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma for the first wicket.
"Next game was after a week - I thought this would be the last time we face Pak before the WC - I will just go out there & play whatever I feel like, not gonna overthink - it worked well for me". - Gill spoke about his visualization recently.
Shubman Gill to possibly face Pakistan in T20 World Cup this June
Shubman Gill could be in line to play his 4th match and 1st in the shortest format against Pakistan in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies. India and Pakistan have been drawn into the same group and they will face each other on June 9 at the iconic New York City.
There are some doubts over Gill's participation due to the rise of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the same position. Thus, it remains to be seen if Gill will make way for Jaiswal to let the latter experience his first Indo-Pak match.
