Indian skipper Shubman Gill was ruled out on Day 2 of the First Test between India and South Africa after he faced some neck spasms. He was later admitted to the hospital and got ruled out of the Kolkata Test.
India lost the match against South Africa, which marks their fourth home Test loss since Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach. This loss marks their third loss in the ongoing WTC cycle and has pushed them to the 4th position on the WTC Points table.
Shubman Gill to miss the Guwahati Test?
The Indian skipper played just 3 balls on Day 2 before leaving the field clutching his neck as he dealt with spasms. The Indian captain, who did not take the field across the two Indian innings, is doubtful for the second game.
Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir provided an update on Gill after the end of the first Test, saying that he is currently being assessed and they will soon take a call on his participation in the next match.
"He's still being assessed, so let's see. Physios will take a call today evening. And we will take a call tomorrow," said Gautam Gambhir when asked if Shubman Gill will travel with the team.
Rishabh Pant's return goes in vain
Rishabh Pant, the veteran Indian wicket-keeper batter, made his return to the Indian team after being sent out from the final match against England at the Oval. He suffered a fracture to his right leg and, as a result of this, missed the series against the West Indies.
Pant made a comeback to the Indian team after some good performances for India A, as he nudged half-centuries in each of the two games. Piked into the first Test, Pant reached a milestone for India with the most Test sixes for India.
He scored 27 runs in the first innings and was dismissed for just 2 runs in the second. India expected at least a cameo from their experienced batter so that they could be propelled towards the modest target, but Pant could not be of much use, nor could Dhruv Jurel, who too was promoted up the order.
Who might replace Shubman Gill for the Second Test if he fails to return from injury?
Shubman Gill might miss the upcoming match against South Africa and will hence have to be replaced by two of the batters who were benched in the Indian dugout. Shubman Gill, who usually bats in the middle order, has to be replaced by any other player.
Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal is likely to replace Gill in the Indian Playing XI, and Rishabh Pant would then be seen as the captain of the Indian side. He is the vice-captain of the Indian side and captained them during the second South African innings.
The Guwahati Test will be played from the 22nd of November at the Guwahati Cricket Stadium, and the final call on Gill is to be made by tomorrow.
