Indian Test captain Shubman Gill, who is supposed to star for India in the Asia Cup 2025, has been snubbed from featuring in the Duleep Trophy first round due to illness after being named the skipper of the North Zone side.
Several Indian players have been named in the Duleep Trophy squads from their zones, and hence this would mark them playing in the opening Duleep Trophy round, which initiates the Indian domestic season for 2025-26.
Among these, many have also been picked to play for India in the upcoming Asia Cup, and Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill is one of those key names who was supposed to feature in the Duleep Trophy and then proceed to the Asia Cup.
Shubman Gill summoned post Duleep Trophy miss
Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill has missed the season-opening Duleep Trophy encounter against East Zone, which began today on the 28th of August at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence. Though the batter has reportedly been summoned to the same place.
Gill was named the skipper of the North Zone side as well, but due to a viral flu he had faced weeks before the Duleep Trophy round, he was ruled out of participation in the domestic tournament. However, his blood reports have now claimed him fit, and he is required to undergo fitness tests at the BCCI CoE.
In his absence, the Haryana top-order batter Ankit Kumar has been assigned to take over as the skipper of the North Zone side, and Services batter Shubham Rohilla has been announced as Shubman Gill's batting replacement.
Dhruv Jurel also misses out on his leadership debut in the Duleep Trophy
Indian wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel, who played a big role in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy despite not being a regular player in the XI, was appointed as the skipper of the Central Zone; however, Jurel has also missed the quarterfinal game against the Northeast Zone.
He has reportedly complained of a groin niggle, and hence, RCB skipper Rajat Patidar, who was appointed as Jurel's deputy, has now taken over the captaincy role. The team also features several other Indian stars, including the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Chahar, and Khaleel Ahmed.
The teams winning the quarter-finals will advance to feature in the semi-finals, which will be played from the 4th of September, while the final has been scheduled for the 11th.
Riyan Parag leads the East Zone side in the Duleep Trophy opener
The East Zone side, who are facing the North Zone side, have also undergone a major blow, as they miss the services of regular skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran and are being led by the youngster Riyan Parag.
Apart from Shubman Gill, two other players from the Asia Cup squad who will be seen in action in the Duleep Trophy round include bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who will come in later to bowl in the game, as they have also been named in the North Zone squad.
