India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill is back to his favorite hunting ground—Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, where the team is currently facing England in the third and final ODI. Shubman Gill continued from where he left off against England and achieved a major milestone.

The Punjab lad is in sublime form with the bat in the ongoing three-match ODI series against England and that is really great sign of the Men in Blue ahead of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India will play their first game against Bangladesh on February 20.

In the first ODI, Gill played a stunning knock of 87 runs off 96 balls to help India beat England by four wickets in Nagpur followed by another fifty (60 runs off just 51 balls) during the team’s four-wicket victory in the second ODI at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

Well, India’s vice-captain continued his remarkable form in the third ODI in Ahmedabad, where he is playing his 50th ODI match for India. Notably, Gill had made his ODI debut for India on January 31, 2019, against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

And he managed to make this occasion memorable by smashing his third consecutive fifty in the ongoing ODI series against England. Actually, Gill needed 25 runs in the ongoing Ahmedabad ODI to reach 2500 runs in ODI cricket, and he achieved this milestone by hitting a boundary on the fifth ball of the 10th over off Gus Atkinson in Ahmedabad.

Shubman Gill scripts history by becoming the fastest player to reach 2500 ODI runs

With this boundary, Shubman Gill has etched his name in the record books by becoming the fastest batter to reach 2500 runs in ODI history during the ongoing third and final ODI against England at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 12).

The right-handed batter achieved this incredible milestone in just 50 innings, surpassing legends like Hashim Amla (51 innings), Vivian Richards (56 innings), and Jonathan Trott (56 innings). With this feat, Gill continues to prove why he is one of the brightest talents in world cricket.

Meanwhile, the battle for the top spot in ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings have intensified among the batters. Babar Azam remains the No. 1 ranked ODI batter in the world, but Shubman Gill has overtaken Indian captain Rohit Sharma in the latest ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings.

Shubman Gill moves to No. 2 in the ICC ODI Rankings, just behind Babar Azam

Gill, who now has 781 rating points, dropped Rohit (773 rating points) to the third spot in the latest rankings. His back-to-back fifties in the ongoing ODI series against England pushed the Indian batter to the second spot in the updated ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings.

Now, the 25-year-old batter is just five points behind Babar (786 rating points), so it would be interesting to see whether Gill can overtake the former Pakistan skipper in the ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings, as he is also playing in the Tri-nation ODI series against New Zealand and South Africa.

Notably, Babar Azam is currently playing against South Africa in Karachi, and if he scores at least 33 runs, the star batter will become the fastest player in history to reach 6000 runs in ODI cricket.
