After an impressive show in his debut series as the India skipper, Shubman Gill is all set to lead the North Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025 season, which marks the beginning of the Indian domestic calendar.

Shubman Gill probably had the finest and most animated start to the career of any Test skipper, as he led India to a draw in the series where India trailed and then fought from behind to draw a remarkable conclusion to the series.

Gill's tally of 754 runs in the series included four centuries, which also included a massive double ton. Gill's tally of runs has now placed him second to Sir Donald Bradman, who had 810 runs, in the list of most runs by a captain in a Test series.

Shubman Gill to lead North Zone in Duleep Trophy

Shubman Gill began the Test series in England as a successor to the great Rohit Sharma and also stepped into a new batting position of No. 4 in the Indian lineup, which was left vacant by the retirement of legendary batter Virat Kohli.

Shubman impressed with his body language, his intensity on the field, his responsibility as a player, and his aggression, which was a new unleashed side of Shubman Gill after he took over as the Indian captain.

This season, the Duleep Trophy returns to its traditional zonal format, with the regions picking their own respective squads. Currently, the South Zone are the reigning champions, having won the title back in the 2023-24 season.

Shubman Gill has been handed the opportunity to lead the North Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, as the North Zone team looks to kickstart their campaign on the 28th of August against the East Zone in Bengaluru.

North Zone Squad: Shubman Gill (C), Shubham Khajuria, Ankit Kumar (V.C), Ayush Badoni, Yash Dhull, Ankit Kalsi, Nishant Sindhu, Sahil Lotra, Mayank Dagar, Yudhvir Singh Charak, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Anshul Kamboj, Auqib Nabi, Kanhaiya Wadhawan (W.K).

Standbys: Shubham Arora (W.K), Jaskaranvir Singh Paul, Ravi Chauhan, Abid Mushtaq, Nishunk Birla, Umar Nazir, Divesh Sharma.

If Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana are selected for the Asia Cup 2025, they will be replaced by Shubham Rohilla (SSCB), Anuj Thakral, and Gurnoor Brar in the squad.

Shubman Gill likely to get a leadership role in the Asia Cup

The Asia Cup has already been a basket of questions for the Indian government, the BCCI, and now the Indian cricket team as well.

Some reports have claimed that Suryakumar Yadav will continue as India's T20I skipper and Shubman Gill will be named his deputy for the Asia Cup 2025. Hence, Shubman is likely to get a leadership role if he is back on the India side for the shortest format after a long absence of nearly a year from the format.

Gill had a monumental contribution to Gujarat Titans' success in the IPL 2025 alongside Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler. The Titans were a very successful batting unit, and the skipper regulated his players to win from several tender junctures of the game.

Asia Cup 2025 to clash with the Duleep Trophy

The Asia Cup has been reported to be a comeback for players like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal in T20Is for India. However, Jaiswal has been picked by the West Zone team, and Gill is set to feature for the North Zone in the Duleep Trophy.

However, this is to be noted: that Gill's presence in the Duleep Trophy will rule him out for selection in the Asia Cup, as the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal for North Zone starts on the 28th of August, while the semifinal, if they qualify, would be on the 4th of September and concludes just 2 days before the onset of the Asia Cup.

Moreover, if the North Zone makes it to the finals, they would need their skipper the most; however, the Duleep Trophy final begins on the 11th of September, a day after India's Asia Cup campaign begins against the UAE on the 10th.
