India National Cricket Team vice-captain Shubman Gill is under scrutiny after another poor batting performance in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. In India’s final group-stage match against Oman, Shubman Gill managed only 5 runs, raising fresh concerns about his form and consistency.
Across the three group-stage games, India’s Test captain has scored only 35 runs, with his 20 not out against the UAE and 10 against Pakistan being the only small positives. Gill’s struggles are most apparent on bowler-friendly pitches and in high-pressure situations.

The right-handed batter has thrived on flat tracks, but he has often failed to adjust when conditions require technique and patience. Gill’s return to the top order, where he replaced in-form wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, came with high expectations, but he has yet to deliver the performances needed to justify his spot and vice-captaincy in the T20I side.

Ahead of India’s big clash against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 Super Four on September 21 in Dubai, the former Indian chief selector Kris Srikkanth extended his support to the struggling Punjab lad. Srikkanth believes that Gill can bounce back in India’s first Super Four clash against Pakistan.

The 1983 World Cup winner has emphasized that India’s vice-captain must focus on playing straighter and adjusting his shots to handle the new-ball threat, which has troubled him in the early overs. With the right approach, Gill can rediscover his form against the Men in Green in Dubai.
Kris Srikkanth said in a video on his YouTube channel, “Shubman Gill coming back to form is very important. I think he'll score in this match (vs Pak). He's the Indian Test captain and likely all-format captain in the future. The ball coming in constantly troubles him because he plays early. My suggestion to him would be to play more straight. Instead of cover driving, he should play the off drive more until he gets set.”

Kris Srikkanth says Shubman Gill’s T20I spot is safe despite Asia Cup 2025 struggles
Meanwhile, the former Indian chief selector also suggested that Gill’s spot in India’s T20I side is secure despite his recent struggles in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, thanks to his vice-captaincy that was given after his sensational form across formats.
Gill dominated IPL 2025, scoring 650 runs in 15 matches at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.87. He carried that form into the recent Test series in England, where he amassed 754 runs at an impressive average of 75, including four centuries to his name.
Srikkanth signed off by saying, “The very fact that they've given him the vice-captain means he's a certainty. In the expected 15-man squad I had pre-Asia Cup, he wasn't in my team. In fact, not many people expected him to be in the 15. But since they've made him the vice-captain, in the future they are trying to make him the all-format captain. Because he had a good IPL also.”
