Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill has been in talks for a new leadership role in the T20 side before the Asia Cup 2025, and now it seems official that Shubman Gill is likely to make his comeback into the Indian T20 side with a lucrative leadership offer.
Ever since the announcement of the Asia Cup, India has been concerned with the captaincy role ahead of the continental championship. Suryakumar Yadav, the regular T20I skipper, had undergone a Sports Hernia surgery, and no claims of recovery were confirmed from the end of CoE.
India is yet to announce their squad for the upcoming ACC event, as it awaits some approvals from the BCCI Centre of Excellence over the concerned fitness of players. The estimated date for the announcement of the teams has been marked on the 19th and 20th of August.
Shubman Gill steps in as India's new T20I vice-captain
There has been a buzz that Shubman Gill would be replacing Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I skipper for the Asia Cup 2025. However, with Surya's speedy recovery on the track and the captain's probable return before the beginning of the tournament, such claims have been thwarted.
However, Shubman Gill is all set to make his T20I comeback for India with this series after being left out for the T20s against England earlier this year. In his absence, Axar Patel was appointed the vice-captain; however, when SKY was declared the skipper, Gill was officially named the Indian vice-captain.

Shreyas Iyer passes fitness Test - Is he expecting a T20I comeback?
India batsman Shreyas Iyer has been an exceptional white-ball cricketer over the last two years. The 30-year-old PBKS skipper has been prolific for domestic sides as well as the Indian team in the limited-overs format.
He led his new franchise, the Punjab Kings, to the finals of IPL 2025 after having led KKR to a title win in 2024. Despite all these successes, he could only manage a spot in the ODI squad but has been sidelined from the T20I format.
Shreyas, who had a commendable ICC World Cup 2023 with the bat for India, missed a central BCCI annual contract the next year and has not featured in a single T20I match since December 2023.
This time around, he was spotted at the BCCI Centre of Excellence to have a fitness Test ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 team selection, hoping for a call back into the T20I side just like Shubman Gill.
RCB and RR wicket-keepers battle for one spot in the India squad for the Asia Cup
India will miss the services of Rishabh Pant, the left-handed wicket-keeper batsman, as he was ruled out with injury during the Test series in England. Sanju Samson remains India's first-choice wicket-keeper and opening batter.
However. India needs a backup wicket-keeper, as Samson's fitness has also been concerning. For which they might be considering the likes of Dhruv Jurel from the Rajasthan Royals and Jitesh Sharma from the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Both the batters had an impressive IPL 2025 season, though JItesh's cameos towards the end proved more handy in finishing games for RCB as he even won a few for them. This would remain a tough choice for the Indian selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar.
