The 2-1 defeat in the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand has raised the question again: Is Shubman Gill the right person to lead Team India in the 50-over format? Gill, 26, kicked off his international journey as the captain on a strong note with a 2-2 scoreline in last year’s England vs India 5-match away Test series.

Despite the credible performances on the English soil, where Shubman Gill performed well with the bat, as well as a debutant captain, he has been struggling to maintain his momentum as the skipper in the ODI format.

After losing an ODI contest against Australia, India lost the home series against the New Zealand cricket team in the recently concluded ODI series. Multiple former international cricketers have already raised questions about Gill’s tactics on the field.

Former cricketer suggests BCCI to sack Shubman Gill from captaincy

Former India batter Manoj Tiwary is the latest to criticise captain Shubman Gill. Tiwary strongly believes that Rohit Sharma would be the best person to lead the team from the front, keeping an eye on the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) assigned Shubman Gill as the Test and ODI skipper in place of Sharma to take a step forward in the upcoming days.

Rohit Sharma, 38, one of the most senior cricketers across the globe, might not be the best fit for the selectors' vision. Despite multiple memorable innings under the leadership of Virat Kohli, it was the Mumbaikar who broke the jinx and brought back the T20 World Cup to India in 2024, followed by the Champions Trophy triumph in 2025. In both of the tournaments, Team India appeared as the undisputed force, which is something the cricket universe had not witnessed before.

According to Manoj Tiwary, the result of the India vs New Zealand ODI series could be different if Rohit Sharma were the captain instead of Gill. “What was the need to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy? I’m pretty sure that if Rohit were leading even today in the ODIs, it would have been a different result (New Zealand series) altogether. Because when he won the Champions Trophy, I think the team was going forward in the right direction,” Tiwary said during an interaction with InsideSport.

Why did Tiwary ask the board to change Team India's ODI skipper?

Before the next edition of the ODI World Cup, India has a few months in hand for preparations. So the former cricketer suggested the board revise their decision and appoint Sharma captain again for the format.

“Yes, absolutely. That’s what I’m suggesting because there’s still time to course correct. It’s about the World Cup. It’s not just about a bilateral series or a random tournament we are going to play," he added.

85 to 90 per cent chance of winning the World Cup: Tiwary

What will be the difference if Rohit leads the team in the ODI World Cup in place of Shubman Shubman Gill? Tiwary believes that under Sharma’s captaincy, India’s chances of winning the ODI World Cup will be increased massively.

“If Rohit becomes the captain, what is the percentage chance of winning? And if Shubman leads, what is the percentage chance of winning? I think everyone will say that if Rohit is the captain, then there is an 85 to 90 per cent chance of winning the World Cup,” he said.
