Shubman Gill suffered a serious injury in the form of a neck spasm during the First Test at Eden Gardens. Former Indian batter Abhinav Mukund has weighed in on the BCCI for their growing inclination towards Shubman Gill's appointment as an all-format captain.
India struggled with an injury to their skipper, Shubman Gill, who faced discomfort with neck spasms, and he was hospitalized over the same. However, India has stumbled in the current series with the blow of a 30-run loss in the first match at Eden Gardens.
After being released from the hospital following the injury, he is uncertain about participating in the second Test in Guwahati, scheduled to be played on the 22nd of November. It would mark a crucial opportunity for them to revive their WTC standings.
India not in sync with England-Australia's split captaincy approach
The BCCI and the Indian management have pushed to elevate Gill as India's upcoming all-format skipper, after he was appointed as the Test and ODI captain for India. He is currently the vice-captain in T20Is.
Shubman Gill was officially named India's ODI skipper ahead of the Australia tour, as he replaced former skipper Rohit Sharma. He might be seen as India's T20I skipper as well, after Suryakumar Yadav, 35, might expect a transition from leadership.
Other major nations like England and Australia have embraced the ideology of splitting captaincy to manage workloads and maintain clarity across formats. Gautam Gambhir, on the other hand, has argued that India does best under an all-format skipper.
"I don't think Shubman Gill should be the all-format captain," opined Abhinav Mukund
Former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund has weighed in on the Board of Control for Cricket in India's growing affection for handing Gill the all-format captaincy. However, he has reasoned that India would benefit more from a split leadership model.
Mukund played seven Tests for India and then went on to be a prominent voice in cricket broadcasting for India. He has acknowledged the Indian captain's leadership qualities, but has yet to put forward the split captaincy concept.
"I think Shubman has it in him to become an all-format captain, but I don't think India should have an all-format captain anymore," Mukund said on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan.
"Split captaincy is a smart move. Shubman Gill has been given the responsibility to take on the mantle in Tests, and he will be under big pressure," he added.
"At home, everyone expects India to win - no questions asked," said the former Indian cricketer
He further went on to point out that the ongoing series against South Africa might be considered as one of Gill's first challenges at home. India's last home series against New Zealand ended in a 3-0 loss, while they bounced back with a 2-0 win over the West Indies last month.
"This is a crucial series," he said. "The England series was a big confidence booster for India. At home, everyone expects India to win - no questions asked."
Under Shubman Gill, India is currently fourth on the WTC Points Table, with 52 points in 8 games and a PCT which is nearly 55. If they win the Guwahati Test, then they can return to the 3rd position, while South Africa would once again be dropped to no. 4.
