The India National Cricket Team continued its dominance under Shubman Gill with a crushing innings-and-300-run victory over the Afghanistan National Cricket Team in the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Monday (June 8).
The India vs Afghanistan Test match ended inside three days as the touring side badly failed to deliver with both the bat and ball in New Chandigarh. The massive win highlighted India's growing strength under Gill's captaincy. However, this match was not part of the WTC 2025-27 cycle.

In the second innings, Washington Sundar shone bright with four wickets as India's bowlers wrapped up the match comfortably inside three days. It was India’s second biggest win after the 1958 crushing of the West Indies.
Shubman Gill's batting reaches another level as captain.
Shubman Gill has transformed into one of the world's most consistent batters since taking over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma in 2025. The stylish right-hander has now scored 1,076 runs in just nine Test matches as captain at an outstanding batting average of 82.76.
His average is second only to legendary Australian captain Don Bradman among captains who have scored more than 1,000 Test runs. Gill has already smashed six centuries in only 15 innings as captain, with the highest score remaining the magnificent 269 that he scored against England.
Gill became the fastest Indian Test captain to complete 1,000 runs in terms of time, reaching the milestone within 351 days of taking charge. He also became the second-fastest Indian captain to reach the landmark in terms of innings, getting there in just 15 innings.

Series results under Shubman Gill
The numbers speak for themselves: nine Tests, five wins, three losses, and one draw. Under Shubman Gill's leadership, India has already delivered impressive results across different conditions. Gill's biggest statement as captain came during India's challenging tour of England last year.
He guided India to a hard-fought 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in his debut season as captain. The biggest highlight of England's tour was India's historic victory at Edgbaston, where Gill became the first Asian captain to win a Test match at the famous venue.
In that match, Shubman Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings and followed it with 161 in the second innings. His combined tally of 430 runs became the highest score by an Indian in Test cricket history. The skipper finished the series with 754 runs in England.
He followed it up with a dominant 1-0 home series victory against the West Indies. But India suffered the embarrassment of a 0-2 Test series loss to South Africa at home under Gill’s captaincy. However, India made a remarkable comeback with the massive innings and a 300-run win over Afghanistan.
