Simon Doull Feels “Terrific Captain” Tom Latham Is Ready To Replace Kane Williamson As New Zealand's Test Captain

Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull feels that the star opening batter Tom Latham is a terrific captain and he is ready to replace Kane Williamson as captain of the New Zealand Test team.

Latham has led the New Zealand Test team in 9 games in the absence of Kane Williamson and amongst those 9 games the Kiwis have won on 4 occasions and they lost 4 games.

Meanwhile, Williamson was tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the second Test match of the three-match Test series against England at the Trent Bridge, Nottingham and Latham was once again appointed as stand-in captain.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Doull said that Latham understands and reads the game very well. He also said that the last game of the Test series between New Zealand and England might be the last match for Williamson as Test skipper as Latham would take over the captaincy of the longest format of the game. He said:

“He’s a terrific captain; I think he understands and reads the game really well, and he is comfortable within his own game at the top of the order. If Kane Williamson is fit for the last Test match and captains New Zealand, might it be for the last time in Test cricket? I just think it’s almost time for Latham to take over this Test side.”

Doull further said that he wants Williamson to become New Zealand’s greatest batter of all time and added that it hurts to see Williamson’s recent struggle for runs.

He further said that he sees Williamson continuing as white-ball captain of the Black Caps and Latham being appointed as Test captain.

“I just want Kane to be the best batter New Zealand has ever had. He will be, but he’s such a good quality player and it hurts me to see what he’s going through at the moment form-wise, coming out of the IPL and into that first Test. He is such a quality player and quality guy. Captaincy in the white-ball format I still see with him moving forward, but I see Latham as our future Test captain – which will relieve some of the pressure on Williamson.”
