Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced a huge cash prize after the women's side won the first-ever Women's Asia Cup title. The Sri Lanka women's team defeated the Indian team to win the title for the very first time.

Sri Lanka chased down 166 runs required to win with their skipper Chamari Athapaththu playing a match-winning knock of 61 off 43 balls. She eventually ended up as the top-scorer in the tournament with 304 runs from five matches. Her scores in the tournament read 12, 119*, 49*, 63, and 61 as she dominated bowlers across all teams. She also took three wickets in the tournament including one in the final.

After Sri Lanka's first-ever Women's Asia Cup title win, the Sri Lankan cricket board has announced a prize of 100,000 USD for the Sri Lankan team and support staff. It was a very good gesture from the board to respect their efforts. It was also the first major win for Chamari as the captain of the side. Meanwhile, the award from the SLC is in addition to the reward from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

Meanwhile, Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary and ACC President extended his wishes to the Sri Lankan women's team for their first major title win.

Jay Shah Lauds Sri Lanka's Women's Asia Cup Title Win

"Congratulations to Sri Lanka for winning the #WomensAsiaCup2024! They’ve performed exceptionally well as a unit throughout the tournament, and this trophy is well-deserved. My heartfelt thanks to all the participating nations for making this a celebration of cricket. #HerStory was truly created" wrote Jay Shah on her official X handle.

For the Indian team, it was their second defeat ever in a Women's Asia Cup final match. They were the defending champions heading into this tournament. They registered comfortable victories against every team they played against. However, despite their best efforts, they came second in front of Chamari Athapaththu and the Lankan side. The cricketers were over the moon with their celebrations. In between, Chamari the skipper was seen in tears after her team won the finale.

In the post-match presentation, she said that this win should inspire the next generation of Sri Lankan women cricketers. She further spoke about her knock saying that it was responsibility to lead from the front that she did.

For Harmanpreet Kaur unfortunately, her winning streak as captain in the Women's Asia Cup in 2024 came to an end. India won by 7 wickets against Pakistan, by 78 runs against UAE, by 82 runs against Nepal, by 10 wickets against Bangladesh. However, their loss came in the final where they were well and truly outplayed. The skipper did not have a memorable tournament with the baat as well scoring just 82 runs in four innings at a strike rate of less than 120.
