A major injury scare hit the Smriti Mandhana-starrer India women’s national cricket team ahead of the knockout games of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 in Navi Mumbai. India is all set to face Australia in the second semifinal at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
India’s last league match against Bangladesh Women was called off due to heavy rain, but the hosts still managed to finish among the top four teams in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 points table, having won three games previously in the tournament.
Big blow for India as Smriti Mandhana’s partner Pratika Rawal suffers injury ahead of ICC Women's World Cup 2025 knockouts
Pratika Rawal suffered a painful knee and ankle injury while fielding against Bangladesh. The incident unfolded in the last ball of the 21st over in the rain-hit match when Bangladesh batter Sharmin Akter pulled a delivery from Deepti Sharma towards the boundary.
Rawal sprinted across from the cow corner but twisted her ankle as her foot got stuck in the wet turf. She fell to the ground clutching her leg in agony, prompting immediate attention from the medical staff. However, a stretcher was brought onto the field, but Rawal chose to walk off with the physio’s support.
With Rawal unable to take the field, Amanjot Kaur opened the chase alongside Smriti Mandhana at the top of the order. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later confirmed that Pratika Rawal’s condition is being closely monitored by the medical team.
The BCCI said in a statement, “The BCCI Medical Team is closely monitoring her progress.”
Harmanpreet Kaur is hopeful as Pratika Rawal undergoes treatment for a knee injury
Rawal’s injury is particularly worrying, as she has been one of India’s top performers in the ongoing tournament. The 25-year-old has scored 308 runs in six innings at an impressive average of 51.33, including a match-winning century against New Zealand that helped India seal their semi-final spot.
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur revealed that they are closely monitoring her injury, and the team is hopeful she will recover quickly and return to action soon.
After the match, Harmanpreet Kaur stated, “Pratika—our medical team will update on her. They are taking care of her injury, and hopefully, she will be back soon.”
Injury concerns mount for India after rain-hit clash against Bangladesh ends in washout
Adding to the worry, Radha Yadav also appeared to twist her foot while fielding later in the innings, but quickly recovered and continued to bowl in their final league match against Bangladesh.
Now, the Indian team hopes that Rawal will recover in time, as her presence at the top has been one of their biggest strengths in their ICC World Cup 2025 campaign so far.
Meanwhile, the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 match between India and Bangladesh was heavily affected by rain, starting two hours late and being reduced to 43 overs per side. Another downpour further forced the contest to shrink to a 27-over game.
Despite the interruptions, Bangladesh managed 119 for 9, and India began their chase strongly, reaching 57 without loss before another spell of rain ended the game in a washout.
