New Zealand great Sophie Devine has announced his retirement from the ODI format. The veteran will bring down the curtains on her illustrious ODI career after the conclusion of this year's ICC Women's ODI World Cup.
After retiring from the 50-over format, Sophie Devine will be opting for a casual playing agreement for the 2025-26 season, New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Tuesday (June 17). The 35-year old has enjoyed a stellar career in international cricket.
Sophie Devine started her ODI career as a No.11
While she started her ODI career as a No.11, she developed into one of the leading allrounders and most explosive batters in women's cricket. Her ODI career began in 2006 when she played against Australia and batted at No.11.
Fast forward to 2025 and Sophie Devine has played 152 ODIs for New Zealand, the second most after Suzie Bates. She has hit 8 centuries and 16 half-centuries in ODIs so far. She has close to 4000 runs in the 50-over cricket in addition to 107 wickets.
It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away - Sophie Devine
"It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away. I feel very fortunate to have NZC's support in finding a solution that means I can still give to the White Ferns.
"It's important that everyone knows I'm focused and dedicated to giving this group everything I can before I step away. I'm really excited by where this young group's going and I'm looking forward to playing my part in the next six to nine months," said Sophie Devine.
Sophie Devine eyes the ODI World Cup
Sophie Devine will look to end her ODI career on a historic note. She would be keen to fire New Zealand to their first-ever ODI World Cup title. After taking charge of the team in 2020, she led New Zealand to their first T20 World Cup last year.
Devine and her teammates will now look to replicate the performance in the ODI World Cup as well. New Zealand have failed to progress beyond the group stage in the last two editions of the tournament and will be desperate to do well in the upcoming competition.
They will start their ODI World Cup 2025 campaign on October 1 against Trans-Tasman rivals and defending champions Australia in Indore.
