In big positive news, Australia Women's captain Sophie Molineux has recovered from a recurring stress reaction in her back in time to make it to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad.
The selectors went with a spin-heavy and slow-pitch strategy for English conditions. Along with Molineux, the selectors have picked quality spin options like Alana King, Georgia Wareham, and star all-rounder Ash Gardner.

Australian selector Shawn Flegler told reporters, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo: “[Molineux is] our skipper, and she's going to play... left-arm orthodox; it's highly valued in the women's game. Georgia's been a no. 1 leg-spinner. Alana's come in and done really well. But I think the pecking order is pretty clear. We've got Ash, Soph, and Georgia, and then if conditions allowed, then Alana comes into it as well.”
Australia shocks fans with Darcie Brown snub for Lucy Hamilton
However, they left Darcie Brown out by backing young left-arm pacer Lucy Hamilton for the tournament. Brown’s exclusion has stunned many because she played a huge role in Australia’s title-winning campaign at the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.
But she struggled in T20Is against India and the West Indies this year. She failed to take wickets regularly, leaked runs at an expensive rate, and did not even complete her full bowling spell in several games.
Because of which, selectors felt England’s slower wickets needed a different type of attack, and they brought up teenage sensation Lucy Hamilton. The 19-year-old only made her international debut a few months ago during the Caribbean tour, but her left-arm angle and control in white-ball cricket have impressed the selectors.

Darcie Brown likely to 'get called up during World Cup'
Flegler said, “She was obviously disappointed. We've been trying to get Darc up over the last couple of years to be a frontline bowler and bowl in that power play, and she just hasn't quite nailed that opportunity, but we still think she's going to have a great career for Australia as well. She's still a young fast bowler; this is certainly not the end, and she may well get called up during the World Cup anyway.”
Hamilton now joins a strong pace attack featuring Megan Schutt, Kim Garth, Nicola Carey, Annabel Sutherland, Tahlia McGrath, and legendary all-rounder Ellyse Perry. Interestingly, Hamilton will be the only left-arm seamer in the squad, giving Australia a unique variation in their bowling attack.
Explaining Hamilton’s selection, Australia coach Shelley Nitschke said, "She gets some good bounce and bowls a really heavy ball; it's a real point of difference, especially for our attack. There are not a lot of them around.”
Grace Harris and Annabel Sutherland return for Women’s T20 World Cup
Meanwhile, Grace Harris made the stunning comeback to the side after missing the West Indies tour on the back of strong domestic performances. And Flegler said, “She's a handy all-round option and someone who can take the game away from an opponent.”
Annabel Sutherland also returned after being rested for the West Indies series. After the retirement of Alyssa Healy from T20I cricket, Beth Mooney has been handed the wicketkeeping job for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Young keeper Tahlia Wilson will travel with the squad as a reserve option for the mega event.
