The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is going on, and it has entered the third round of the 19th edition of the league. Mohammed Shami has been one of the most talked-about players in recent times, given his superb form in domestic cricket across formats for the Bengal side. He has been overlooked by the India National Cricket Team.

Mohammed Shami once again came up to deliver in the IPL, first match picking a wicket of his first delivery in the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) vs Delhi Capitals (DC) game of KL Rahul. In the second match, Mohammed Shami delivered a match-winning performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), picking up 9/2 in his four-over spell.

Mohammed Shami shines for LSG

Shami dismantled the top order of SRH, picking the wickets of Abhishek Sharma first and then the dangerous Travis Head. Since returning from his injury, the veteran pacer has been brilliant in domestic cricket, picking up 8 wickets in an innings in the semi-final against Jammu & Kashmir. He still awaits a national call-up as he last featured in last year’s ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand.

Ahead of LSG’s next match against Kolkata Knight Riders, Mohammed Shami was present at an event along with former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and captain Sourav Ganguly, as the latter has highly praised the pacer for his exceptional performances in domestic cricket. Ganguly still believes Shami should be the second-choice bowler along with Jasprit Bumrah.

He should be bowling at the opposite end of Bumrah- Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly was asked ‘When you watch a Mohammed Shami these days, sport is all about joy. How much joy do these people give you?’ Ganguly replied, “You know, all of them. It’s amazing. And I keep saying again that he should be bowling at the opposite end of Bumrah and not anywhere else. That’s how good he is.”

“We saw the spell the other night in the game between Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad, against two of the best T20 players in the world, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. Four overs, nine runs it’s a phenomenal effort.”

“He went through an entire Ranji Trophy season, picking up wickets for Bengal. I still remember that afternoon in the semi-final when we lost — Mohammed Shami came in the morning and picked up eight wickets. Although we got the lead and didn’t go on to play the final, he was instrumental in Bengal reaching the semi-final this season.”

I still think he should play for India- Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly kept talking about Mohammed Shami’s recent Ranji Trophy performance. He was overwhelmed and also pointed out Shami’s fitness, and believes when a bowler bowls 30 overs in a day they become naturally fit. Ganguly also feels that Shami should play for India.

Sourav said, “I’m so happy to hear that he wants to keep playing Ranji Trophy. I know it’s going to be very hard for him because he’s a fast bowler, but I hope he continues to do that for our state. There’s nothing better than watching Mohammed Shami run in with the new ball.”

“I still think he should play for India, and hopefully that chance will come. Because he’s so good — when you see the ball coming out with the seam upright, not moving an inch on either side, it’s a treat to watch.”

“So, good luck to him for what he has achieved as a player and as a fast bowler for India. I still feel he has a couple of seasons left. When I met him today, I told him that he looks as fit as ever. It’s great to see him because when you keep bowling for 4–5 months, you naturally become fit.”

“No training is as good as bowling long spells in a Ranji Trophy game. So I wish him all the best. And as I say, with full respect, I still want to see him bowling for India.”
