Sourav Ganguly, Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket, has hailed Delhi Capitals as the best team in the tournament after their loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final of the recently-concluded Women’s Premier League (WPL).

For the second year in a row, Delhi Capitals dominated the league stage and qualified for the final. Just like the first edition of the WPL, Delhi Capitals won six of their eight league games and made it to the final. However, they could not win the title this year either as RCB thrashed them by eight wickets to clinch their maiden WPL title.

Captain Meg Lanning won the toss and opted to bat first. She and her opening partner Shafali Verma gave Delhi a solid start by adding 64 runs for the opening wicket before the latter’s dismissal opened the floodgates. In no time, Delhi found themselves reeling at 64 for 3 from 64 for 0 as Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey were dismissed for ducks by Sophie Molineux.

Delhi kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 113 runs in the 19th over. Shafali top-scored for her side, scoring 44 while no other batter could even touch the 30-run mark. In reply, RCB chased down the total in the final over of the game.

Openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine added 49 runs for the first wicket before the latter departed for 32. Mandhana and Ellyse Perry then added 33 runs for the second wicket before the latter and Richa Ghosh shared an unbeaten 33-run stand to take RCB home.
