Since former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his desire to see a biopic on himself, there have been plenty of anticipations. Sourav Ganguly is one of the most iconic figures in the Indian cricket, known for his fearless approach as captain and batting. The Prince of Kolkata was one of the significant reasons behind the Indian team’s rise and continues to take it to great heights as an administrator. While Ranbir Kapoor might be the frontrunner now to play the lead, Ganguly wanted Srijit Mukherji to be the director.

Biopics have indeed been the toast of the town for a long time. Almost every year, we have seen biopic of a reputed personality or an unsung hero. MS Dhoni’s biopic, which came out in 2016, became one of the most-watched movies, while the one released on Mohammad Azharuddin earlier that year also received plenty of impressive reviews from experts.

Meanwhile, Economic Times reported that in 2018, there existed rumours of Sourav Ganguly’s biopic and that he was in some conversations with the production house too. At that time, the current BCCI President wanted Srijit Mukherji to perform the role. Nevertheless, with Ganguly remaining busy with his cricket commitment, no deal came through. “There was a plan in place in 2018 and we had met a lot of producers. But, because Sourav was very busy with his cricket commitment no deal came through,” said Mukherjee.

The unnamed director remained uncertain of the director and the actor playing the lead role for Ganguly’s biopic. He continued saying that during their discussions with the producers three years ago, they did not speak about who would play the protagonist. Nevertheless, if Ranbir Kapoor is confirmed to play the role, he is expected to do a good job, given how he did in Sanju three years ago.

“I really have no idea who will direct the biopic now and who will play the lead role. During our discussions we did not speak about who could play his role in the biopic,” the 43-year old added.
