The owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sun Group, have become the third IPL franchise to acquire a stake in the Hundred. The SRH owners have made the highest bid to buy a stake in Northern Superchargers, which has Yorkshire as its host county.

Northern Superchargers will be the third T20 franchise team bought by the Sun Group. They are already the owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, a team which they bought in 2012.

Sunrisers Hyderabad went on to win the IPL title in 2016 and finished as the runners-up in IPL 2024. Sun Group further added Sunrisers Eastern Cape to their portfolio as well which won the first two editions of the SA20.

Sun Group buys 100% stake in Northern Superchargers

According to ESPNCricinfo, the Sun Group has accepted the invitation to buy a 100% stake in Northern Superchargers. It includes a 49% stake in the ECB and a 51% stake in the host county Yorkshire.

The Superchargers also became the first team to be fully sold. It is to be noted that the host counties had retained a share in the sale of the first five franchises. It is believed that the valuation of Superchargers was £100 million.

There were two more parties interested in buying the team. Yorkshire will keep 80% of the revenue from the sale of their 51% stake. It will provide the club with a profit of £40 million. Both Sun Group and Yorkshire have to complete the agreement within eight weeks of the end of the Hundred sale.

Yorkshire looking forward to working with Sun Group

The chief executive of Yorkshire, Sanjay Patel, expressed his pleasure and welcomed Sun Group into the Northern Superchargers. Patel claimed that the group respects the values of the club and aims to achieve great success in the future.

"We are delighted to be entering into an exclusivity period with the Sun Group, and will be continuing our conversations with them in the coming weeks with a view to setting the Northern Superchargers up for long-term and sustained success," Sanjay Patel stated.

"Having been in consultation with them for some time now, it is clear that they are aligned with the values and future direction of the club and will play a huge part in ensuring we can go on to achieve great success in the coming years.

"Today is clearly a huge milestone for Yorkshire CCC, the Northern Superchargers, and the Sun Group, but it is worth stressing that there is a lot of detail to be discussed alongside further due diligence and legal processes before a contract can be signed," he added.

The owner of the Sun Group is Kalanithi Maran, the chairman and founder of the group which is one of the largest media conglomerates of India. He successfully bid for Sunrisers Hyderabad after the BCCI terminated the ownership contract of the previous Hyderabad-based franchise Deccan Chargers.

Third IPL franchise to buy Hundred team

The Sun Group joins RPSG Group and Reliance Industries Limited to be the third IPL franchise to buy a stake in the Hundred's teams. RPSG Group, which is the owner of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL has bought stakes in Manchester Originals.

Meanwhile, Reliance Industries, which is the owner of Mumbai Indians in the IPL has bought stakes in Oval Invincibles. Another IPL team owner, GMR Group, which is the co-owner of Delhi Capitals in IPL is in line to buy a stake in Southern Brave.
