Lahiru Thirimanne announced his retirement On July 22

Earlier, Lahiru Thirimanne announced his retirement from international cricket on his social media handle on July 22. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Sri Lanka and declared his immediate retirement from the sport.

“It has been an absolute honour to represent my country for the past few years. This game has given me so much over the years. But with a lot of mixed feelings, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect,” Thirimanne’s Facebook post read.

Thirimanne made his international debut in an ODI match against India in Bangladesh in 2010. The batter last played for the country in a Test match against India in Bengaluru in March 2022, during Sri Lanka’s tour of India. Since then, he wasn’t in the selector’s scheme of things.

The middle-order batter represented the nation in 44 Test matches, 127 ODIs, and 26 T20 Internationals (T20Is). He scored 2,088 runs, 3,194 runs, and 291 runs in the three formats, respectively. He smashed two centuries in red-ball cricket and four centuries in the 50-over format.

The southpaw helped the team register a title victory in the Asia Cup 2014 final with his magnificent century. He emerged as the leading run-getter in the tournament with 279 runs in five games at an average of 55.80. He was also part of Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2014.
