Sri Lanka Cricket Team had a topsy-turvy T20 World Cup 2022. The Island Nation showed great character after losing their first match against Namibia in the Qualifiers. The team would be disappointed once again that they failed to make it to the knock-out stage.
Sri Lankan Team is all set to clash against the rising Afghanistan Cricket Team in a 3 Match ODI Series starting on 25th November (Friday). This ODI Series is quite vital for both teams because it is a part of the World Super League where Sri Lanka is placed in 10th position with 62 points whereas Afghanistan at 7th position with 100 points.
Chamika Karunaratne Handed One Year Suspended Ban
An inquiry panel was set up against the all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne for breaching several clauses in the player agreement during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022. The Cricketer has pleaded guilty and the executive committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has handed a suspended ban of 1 year. The inquiry has also warned the Cricketer and there is a fine imposed on Karunaratne of 5,000 USD/-.
Huge Loss for Sri Lanka
The absence of Chamika Karunaratne is a massive blow to the team. The all-rounder had become an integral part of the team since last year as he had the knack of picking wickets at crunch situations of the match. The batter could also provide some lusty blows at the back end of the innings which were quite invaluable. Karunaratne would be utterly disappointed with himself as this suspension can change his career drastically.
Skipper Dasun Shanka will now have to bat more responsibly as earlier Karunaratne used to provide the impetus. Head Coach Chris Silverwood will now have to find new combinations for the upcoming ODI Series against Afghanistan. We should not forget that Afghanistan had defeated Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2022; the format may be different but Sri Lanka would be wary of the threat. It would be interesting to see whether Sri Lanka plays with 3 spinners as the pitches would be spin friendly.
