Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced a strong and well-balanced squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh.

Charith Asalanka will continue as captain, while star pacer Matheesha Pathirana has been dropped from the squad due to underwhelming ODI performances.

In the top order, the Lankan team has picked a powerful trio of Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, and Kusal Mendis to provide a solid start in the three-match ODI series against the Tigers.

Promising young batter Nishan Madushka, who recently scored three half-centuries in just four matches, has been rewarded for his consistency with a spot in the squad.

Lanka announce strong squad for Bangladesh ODIs

The experienced batter Kusal Mendis has been named in the ODI squad despite injuring his shoulder during the ongoing second Test in Colombo, as the team management is hopeful about his fitness.

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kamindu Mendis will handle the middle-order duties, while skipper Charith Asalanka is likely to continue at his preferred No. 5 position.

In the all-rounder department, Janith Liyanage has regained his place in Lanka’s ODI squad, along with spin-bowling all-rounders Dunith Wellalage and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Hasaranga is expected to lead Lanka’s spin attack, and he will be supported by Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay, as the team looks to use spinning conditions to their advantage at home.

The in-form pacer Dilshan Madushanka will lead Lanka’s pace attack with Asitha Fernando and IPL 2025 breakout star Eshan Malinga.

Well, Matheesha Pathirana’s omission didn’t come as a surprise, as his ODI numbers haven't been impressive, taking just 17 wickets with an economy rate of 7.27.

Announcing the squad, the Sri Lanka Cricket Posted on X: “The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee has selected the following 16-member Sri Lanka squad to play in the upcoming ODI series vs. Bangladesh. The ODI series will be played on the 2nd, 5th, and 8th of July. The first two ODIs will be played at the RPICS, Colombo, before the series moves to the PICs, Pallekele, for the final game.”

Bangladesh collapse again as Lanka eyes big win in 2nd Test

Meanwhile, Bangladesh and Lanka are currently facing each other in the second Test, where the hosts are still leading by 90+ runs. A

fter opting to bat first, Bangladesh could manage only 247 runs in the first innings, with Shadman Islam (46) being the top scorer against the Islanders.

Asitha Fernando and Sonal Dinusha were the top bowlers, with each taking a three-wicket haul against the Tigers.

In reply, Pathum Nissanka’s stunning 158, Dinesh Chandimal’s 93, and Kusal Mendis’ 84-run knock took the Sri Lankan side to 458, with Taijul Islam taking five wickets.

Currently, Bangladesh’s score stands at 115/6 in their second innings, still trailing by 96 runs, as the hosts have a great chance to register a big win at home on June 27.
