The impasse between the Sri Lankan cricketers and the SLC is having severe consequences on the players’ personal life. According to a report in The Sunday Morning, the players are unable to pay off loans, EMIs, and insurances for their families as they haven’t received money from the board.

Several players have not signed the new contracts offered by the board earlier in the year as the new deals see them losing plenty of money from their previous contracts. Hence, the standoff remains between the two parties.

The players earlier accepted temporary tour contracts for their tour to England, and now while hosting India.

The same report stated that the players have written a letter to the SLC, asking it to honor the contract and pay the old dues as soon as possible.

“Due to the new contract, we have not been paid any kind since January 2021. The players are not clear about the new contract. They should be informed about this in writing. Under the new contract, the salary of the players has to be cut by 30 per cent,” the letter said.

The lack of annual contracts has meant some of the players can’t pay even the house installments, are unable to buy the insurance for their families; some have even postponed their marriages.

Senior all-rounder Angelo Mathews, who was not selected for the England tour, opted out of the home matches against India for “personal reasons”. However, it has been reported the Mathews is even considering retirement since his and other seniors’ issues continue with the board over the contracts and payments.

Under the new central contracts offered by the board, Mathews had to take a pay cut in the range of US$ 50,000 (approx. 99,50,000 LKR), despite being one of their star performers in the past few years.
