Sri Lanka Playing 11 vs Pakistan- Asia Cup 2025, Super 4 Match 3
Openers: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (wk)
Sri Lanka, the defending Asia Cup champions in the T20I format, would want to make a strong comeback after losing a close match against Bangladesh.
The Lankan lions will be up against Pakistan, who are also coming in the match on the back of a loss against India.
Although Sri Lanka lost the last match, the Charith Asalanka-led side would be confident of getting the better of Pakistan as it looks like a more settled unit than their opponents and has all the bases covered.
Sri Lanka will begin the innings with the in-form opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, both of whom have scored at least one fifty in the tournament so far, and will look to build on it in the upcoming match.
The duo, which is known for its aggressive style of play in the first six overs, would hope to continue in the same way against a Pakistani bowling lineup that is struggling for form.
Middle-order batsmen and all-rounders: Kamil Mishara, Kusal Perera, Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka (c), Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Welalage
The opening pair will be followed by a middle order, which, although posting a decent total against Bangladesh, could have scored 10-15 runs more if the likes of Kamil Mishara and Kusal Perera had batted with a bit more intent.
The middle-order batters would like to rectify that in the next game by taking on the Pakistani bowlers in the middle phase of the innings.
Having said that, the team management would be happy with the way former captain Dasun Shanka and current captain Charith Asalanka batted in the final five overs to help the team get to a defendable score.
Shanka, in particular, was the aggressor of the two as he scored a much-needed half-century. The all-rounder would aim to continue the form that he has picked up and deliver another solid performance against Pakistan.
Bowlers: Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Thushara
Lanka would once again bank on their bowlers to come good against a Pakistani batting lineup, which showed some sort of form in the previous match against India.
The onus will be on Wanindu Hasaranga to lead the Lankan bowling attack, being the most experienced nowler in the team.
Hasaranga, who was the pick of the bowlers for the team against Bangladesh, would want a great deal of support from other bowlers as well.
As far as Sri Lanka's fast bowling department is concerned, it will be taken care of by Dushamantha Chameera and Nuwan Thushara.
Lanka will need to address the concern regarding the fifth bowling option before the match against Pakistan.
Despite Dasun Shanaka trying his best to defend five runs in the last over, the all-rounder wasn't able to do so, and it felt like Sri Lanka were always chasing the game once one of the four regular bowling options was taken for runs.
In the last two games, it has been Dunith Wellalage who has fulfilled the role of the fourth bowler for Sri Lanka, a move which hasn't paid dividends till now, with him not being able to pick wickets.
Owing to the above-mentioned reason, Lanka might think of bringing an extra fast bowler in the form of Maheesh Theekshana, considering that the other spin bowling option, Maheesh Theekshana, isn't in great form either.
