Sri Lanka President steps in for high-stakes meeting with cricket chief - Sacking imminent?

Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is scheduled to meet the country’s cricket board chief Shammi Silva on Friday. This meeting comes amid growing speculation about a possible leadership change within the board, with reports suggesting the government is considering appointing an interim administration.
Government officials reportedly want Shammi Silva to step down to allow the immediate appointment of a new administration from May 1. The move is driven by concerns over player unrest, a decline in international rankings, and disappointing performances from the national team in recent tournaments.
Sri Lanka President to Meet Cricket Chief Amid Sacking Speculation
Shammi Silva secured his current presidential term last year, which runs until May 2027. However, Sri Lanka’s 1973 Sports Law gives the Sports Minister the power to dissolve governing bodies. This legal provision remains in conflict with ICC regulations regarding political interference.
A former Sports Minister removed him from his position in November, but following a prolonged legal battle, Shammi Silva was reinstated through court intervention, reversing the earlier decision that had disrupted the board’s functioning.
Any political move at this stage could carry serious international consequences. A previous attempt to appoint an interim committee in December 2024 resulted in Sri Lanka being suspended by the ICC, which ultimately led to the country losing hosting rights for the 2025 Under-19 World Cup.
Sri Lanka Government to Consult ICC Before Any Move on Shammi Silva
Any move to replace Shammi Silva will be taken only after consulting the International Cricket Council. Officials want to avoid repeating the December 2024 controversy, when political interference led to Sri Lanka being isolated from global cricket.
When the ICC suspended Sri Lanka, the board suffered major financial and reputational losses. The 2025 Under-19 World Cup was moved to South Africa. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake wants this transition handled smoothly without risking another suspension.
The meeting with the President is scheduled for Friday, April 24. Both sides must handle the situation carefully, balancing local sports laws while maintaining the board’s independence as required by the ICC.
Sri Lanka’s Poor T20 World Cup 2026 Campaign Adds to Administrative Pressure
These administrative tensions came after Sri Lanka’s disappointing campaign in the recently concluded 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite co-hosting the tournament with India, the Dasun Shanaka-led team failed to deliver strong performances and was eliminated in the Super Eight stage.
During the Super Eight Stage, Sri Lanka suffered three consecutive defeats on home soil. They lost to England by 51 runs and then to New Zealand by 61 runs, with their batting struggles drawing heavy criticism from fans.
Their campaign in the T20 World Cup ended with a narrow five-run loss to Pakistan at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Despite captain Dasun Shanaka’s effort, these results increased pressure on the board and led to growing government concern.
