Last month, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) appointed Stephen Fleming as the new Test head coach of the England National Cricket Team after they sacked Brendon McCullum from the role following the series loss to New Zealand. Now Stephen Fleming has urged former Australia batter and the CSK legend, Michael Hussey, to join his England coaching staff.
Michael Hussey has had a long association with Stephen Fleming since the days when the latter was the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise. Hussey has played under Fleming as the head coach and later joined the Men in Yellow as a batting coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL). It will be interesting to watch if Hussey takes up a new role.
Stephen Fleming urges Michael Hussey for batting coach role
According to SEN Cricket's Tom Morris, Stephen Fleming has been in contact with Michael Hussey and asked him whether he would take up the batting coach role for the England Test side. However, the ECB has not made an official offer or contact to the former Australia batter, so there are doubts over whether he will be given the Test batting coach role.

Michael Hussey has been working under Fleming since January 2018 as the batting coach. However, they played for one season together in 2008, the inaugural edition of the IPL. Post then, Fleming became the coach of CSK in 2009, and Hussey played under him from 2009 to 2013 and then came back and played in 2015.
Michael Hussey's record as head coach
Hussey is currently working with Welsh Fire in the ongoing The Hundred. He is the Men’s head coach, as he took over the role in 2023 and replaced former South Africa batter, Gary Kirsten. The franchise under him in the first year finished fourth in the men’s competition and then 6th place, and last year they finished at the bottom of the table.
This season it has been contrasting; they are second in the points table with the same points as league leaders Trent Rockets, but they have a negative NRR, which has shifted them to the second position with four wins and one loss in five games. Hussey would like them to guide them to their first Hundred title.
When will Stephen Fleming take up the head coach role?
Fleming will be taking over the head coach role in the winter from the South Africa tour; ahead of that, Marcus Trescothick will work as an interim coach for the three-Test series against Pakistan, beginning at Headingley on August 19.
The ECB allowed Fleming to have a holiday and spend time with his family due to the IPL, SA20, and coaching in various leagues; he does not get much time to spend with his family. He was associated with CSK for 18 long years and stepped down from the head coach role after the 2026 season.
David Saker, the Aussie bowling coach, will continue to lead the English squad throughout the series against Pakistan. According to South African sources, Fleming is set to replace Saker with Eric Simmons. Additionally, the two collaborated at the Chennai Super Kings during the Indian Premier League.
