Stephen Fry Named Next President Of MCC

English actor and comedian Stephen Fry on Wednesday was named the next President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
Fry is a patron of the MCC Foundation and also delivered an essential MCC Cowdrey Lecture at the Lord’s on November 16, 2021. He became the second non-cricketing personality after Archbishop Desmond Tutu delivered the Lecture in 2008.

Fry will take over the role from Clare Connor, who is the current President of the MCC. In fact, Connor was the one to nominate the English actor as her successor. Fry will take charge on October 1 this year.
“I am honored and proud to be nominated as the next President of MCC,” Fry said. “It is a club that is known throughout the world for what it represents in the game and to be gifted the opportunity to perform this role is truly humbling,” Fry said.
“I thank Clare for this incredible opportunity and I look forward to supporting her as President Designate over the summer before commencing my own innings in the autumn,” he added.

Fry is known for his work on screen as an award-winning and renowned actor, host, and presenter. He is also a bestselling author, with works including four novels and three volumes of autobiography.
“I am thrilled to be able to announce Stephen as my successor. He has a deep love and care for cricket and will be a wonderful ambassador for MCC,” Clare Connor said in a statement.
The 64-year-old Fry is also an advocate for mental health and the President of Mind, a mental health charity. Fry’s appointment was ratified at MCC’s Annual General Meeting at Lord’s on Wednesday, the first in the club’s 235-year history to be held in a hybrid format, with members attending in person at the ground as well as online.
