Steve Smith blames SCG pitch for missing 10,000 Test runs milestone in BGT

Australia National Cricket Team batter Steve Smith talked about not getting to 10000 runs in Test cricket during the last match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He said that it's okay not to get the milestone, but he is happy that they won the match at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.

Australia National Cricket Team batter Steve Smith was one of the major reasons behind the win of the team in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The premier batter, who was short on form, was back to his best as he slammed two glorious tons in the five-match Test series against India National Cricket Team.

Smith played a vital role for the team in the series. The premier batter also played a vital innings with the bat in the last match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He had a great chance to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket but missed that opportunity by a small margin.

Smith was removed by Prasidh Krishna in the second innings at Sydney Cricket Ground and this left him stranded at 9999 runs in the longest format of the game. The batter went down the track, but it was a short ball, and the ball rose sharply to take the edge and go to the gully region.

Steve Smith talked about the dismissal, saying that he got chainsawed. He said that it was a nasty ball as he felt that he had a great chance to punch through point. He also talked about not getting to 10000 runs and while speaking to Triple M, he explained:

"I got chainsawed, didn’t I! Pretty nasty delivery, actually—back of a length. I thought, 'Oh, there's one to punch through point,' and it just took off. It wasn’t to be (reaching 10k Test runs), but that’s alright—we got the result we were after.

"Absolutely (toughest SCG pitch I’ve played on). By a mile. It was two-paced, up and down, seaming all over the place, and swinging. I’ve never played on a wicket like that at the SCG before. It was incredibly difficult to bat."

Steve Smith added that it was a fun series to be part of. He talked about the challenges in the series and credited Jasprit Bumrah for troubling them, adding that they were fortunate to get the result in the end. He elaborated:

"I love the game; it’s been a fun series. India are an unbelievable team. There have been some great challenges—Bumrah in particular. It’s been great fun, and we were fortunate to get the result in the end,"

Australia National Cricket Team won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 after 10 years. They won the series by the margin of 3-1 and also qualified for the final of the ICC World Test Championship.
