Star Australian batter and former captain Steve Smith has expressed his desire to return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) for next year's tournament. Steve Smith has confirmed that he will be putting his name in the Indian Premier League 2025 mega auction, which is scheduled to take place later this year.

Steve Smith was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2010. The right-handed batter was later picked by the Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Smith made his IPL debut with the Pune Warriors India in the 2012 season. He also represented the Rajasthan Royals, the Rising Pune Supergiants, and the Delhi Capitals.

Smith was appointed captain of the Rajasthan Royals midway through the 2015 IPL season. He was bought by the Rising Pune Supergiants during the 2016 auction. Smith guided the Supergiants to the final match in the 2017 season. He was named captain of the Rajasthan Royals ahead of the IPL 2018 season.

The 35-year-old last featured in the IPL for the Delhi Capitals, led by Rishabh Pant, in 2021. He scored 152 runs from 8 matches at an average of 25.33 during the 2021 season. Smith has scored 2,485 runs in 103 matches at an average of 34.51 and a strike rate of 128.09, with one century and 11 half-centuries.

Smith finished as the second joint-highest run-scorer of the tournament.
