Former England pacer Stuart Broad has raised questions over the Great Barrier Reef Arena pitch after Australia’s win over Bangladesh in the second Test in Mackay. Broad questioned the surface after the match ended inside two days, with 30 wickets falling across 125 overs in the second adn final Test.
Australia secured an innings-and-51-run victory at the Great Barrier Reef Arena on Sunday, August 23, to level the series 1-1. Mitchell Starc claimed a 10-wicket match haul as Bangladesh were dismissed for 64 and 95. Australia scored 210 in their only outing, with Cameron Green top-scoring with 67 runs.
Stuart Broad Questions Mackay Pitch and Australian Conditions
Speaking on the For The Love Of Cricket YouTube channel, Stuart Broad questioned Australia’s decision to prepare a bowler-friendly pitch in Mackay. The former England pacer felt such surfaces could create unnecessary risks for Australia against stronger visiting teams.
Stuart Broad said, “Aussies beat Bangladesh by an innings and draw the series 1-1, but there are still some question marks over them. Starc was a beast again, swinging the ball, while the pitch nipped and bounced all over the place. It does feel like the pitches this year are going all over the place, which means teams don't necessarily need to rely on spinners.”
“For me, if you're a team that feels you're better man-for-man than the opposition, you should play on a flatter pitch. If Bangladesh had won the toss and bowled, they could have rolled Australia for 60 and put them in huge trouble. It was a risk because of how much the pitch nipped and moved.”
The Mackay Test lasted only 750 deliveries, the fourth-shortest completed men’s Test in history. It was also Australia’s third two-day Test in their last seven home matches, following quick finishes in Perth and Melbourne during the Ashes 2025-26.
Mitchell Starc Enters Top 10 All-Time Test Wicket-Takers
Mitchell Starc produced a stunning spell on Day 1 to put Bangladesh under pressure. The left-arm pacer struck with the first ball of the match before completing a five-wicket haul in 22 balls. He finished the first innings with 6/12 from 10 overs as Bangladesh collapsed for 64.
Starc continued his dominance in the second innings, taking 4/39 from 10 overs. He dismissed Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque with consecutive deliveries to complete his fourth 10-wicket match haul. Starc finished with 10/51 and won both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards.
Starc also moved into the top 10 wicket-takers in Test history, overtaking South African great Dale Steyn. He has 445 Test wickets, the fourth among Australian bowlers and fifth among fast bowlers.
Stuart Broad Raises Concerns Over Marnus Labuschagne's Form
Stuart Broad also raised concerns about Marnus Labuschagne’s poor run of form ahead of Australia’s demanding schedule. Broad noted that Labuschagne’s place at No. 3 is under pressure after the batter failed to score consistently for more than three years.
Stuart Broad said, “Starc got the ball in his hand and caused absolute chaos. He won Australia the game in that first hour. But Labuschagne didn't get runs again, and I think his spot at No. 3 is being questioned now. He's averaging just under 25 since July 2023, which is a long period of time.”
“I suppose the question is whether he goes to South Africa. Australia have a lot of Test cricket coming up, with South Africa away, India away, England away and New Zealand at home. They could either win everything and become immortalised in Australian cricket, or it could fall apart relatively quickly for them.”
Labuschagne scored four off nine balls in Mackay after making 1 and 31 in Darwin. His poor form has increased pressure on his place ahead of Australia’s away series against South Africa, India, and England, as well as their home series against New Zealand.
