Several former Pakistan cricketers, including Javed Miandad, have expressed their disappointment over the recent comments made by legendary Sunil Gavaskar about Pakistan's participation in this year's Asia Cup.

In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and its links to Pakistan, the bilateral relations between the two countries have deteriorated further.

India and Pakistan do not play bilateral series against each other at present and face each other only in the Asia Cup and ICC competitions.

India vs Pakistan cricket diplomacy sinks

The last bilateral series between them took place in the 2012/13 season, while the last Test series took place way back in 2007.

Following the recent terror attack, there have been calls from several quarters to boycott Pakistan even in ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup. A recent report also stated that the Asia Cup might get cancelled this year.

Gavaskar had advocated Pakistan's OUT stance

While only time will tell how things unfold, Sunil Gavaskar recently stated that Pakistan might decide against participating in the Asia Cup this year because of the current political situation.

"BCCI's stance has always been what the government of India tells them to do. So I don't think it would be any different when it comes to the Asia Cup."

India and Sri Lanka are the hosts for this particular edition of the Asia Cup, so it depends on whether things have changed at all, but if things haven't changed, I can't see Pakistan now being part of the Asia Cup, which is going to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka," Sunil Gavaskar told Sports Today.

Javed Miandad reacts to Sunil Gavaskar's remarks

Sunil Gavaskar's remarks have not gone well with several stalwarts of Pakistan cricket. Reacting to the remarks, Miandad said that he is in disbelief.

"I can't believe Sunny bhai said this," he told telecomasia.net. "He's a respectful, down-to-earth person who always stayed away from politics."

On the other hand, former spinner Iqbal Qasim said: "Gavaskar is a responsible figure loved on both sides of the border. Politics should not mix with sports."

Pakistan shocked to the core

Basit Ali did not mince any words, calling the remarks 'stupid' as he said: "Let the investigation conclude. Cricket should remain above political hostilities."

India and Pakistan last played against each other in February this year during the Champions Trophy. Team India beat Pakistan in that game and went on to win the tournament.
