Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has stated that the media and fans should not jump to conclusions regarding the emergence of an alleged ‘rift’ between Indian captains, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Recently, the BCCI appointed Rohit as the full-time ODI captain as well, having given him the T20I captaincy last month. This apparently didn’t go down well with Kohli, who had expressed his desire to continue as the ODI captain while announcing that he will be relinquishing the T20I captaincy.

In addition, former captain Mohammad Azharuddin hinted that there is a communication gap between Kohli and Rohit. However, Gavaskar said that if Azharuddin does have inside information regarding the same, he should reveal it in public.

The question is, ‘is there anything simmering at all (between Kohli and Rohit)?’ Unless both the players come out with something, we should not jump to conclusions. Yes, Azharuddin has said something but if he has got some inside information about what has happened then he should be coming out and telling us what happened,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

Sunil Gavaskar defended the two captains, claiming that they have contributed immensely towards Indian cricket and should be given the benefit of the doubt before making any speculations.

Till then, I will give the benefit of the doubt to both the players. Because both have served Indian cricket brilliantly and I don’t think it is fair at all for any one of us, without having exact information, to be pointing fingers at either of them,” Gavaskar added.

The reports emerged after Kohli reportedly asked to be recused from the 3-match ODI series against South Africa that begins on January 19.
