Former India captain and batting great, Sunil Gavaskar will be felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on March 9, 2021, for completing 50 years since making his Test debut for India. He will be gifted a permanent box at the Wankhede Stadium to mark this occasion.
The right-hander made his Test debut on 6th March 1971 against West Indies in the Port Of Spain. He scored 65 and 67* in his debut Test. Sunil Gavaskar announced himself to the world by smashing a record 774 runs in that series – which is still a world record for most runs in the debut Test series.
He averaged a mammoth 154.80 in that series having notched up 4 three-digit scores, including a double hundred in the last game, as the visitors registered a historic Test series victory in West Indies.
Delighted to honour legendary Shri Sunil Gavaskar: MCA president
On Saturday, Sunil Gavaskar, who retired in 1988 after amassing 10122 Test runs, was invited by the MCA president, Vijay Patil, and secretary Sanjay Naik to the Wankhede Stadium. The 71-year-old was shown the box containing 10-12 seats, which would be named after him.
In July last year, MCA’s Apex Council had decided to give a special gift to the legendary opener on the occasion of him completing 50 years since his international debut.
“We are delighted to honour one of the world’s greatest opening batsman to ever play the game and India’s pride, the legendary Shri Sunil Gavaskar with a permanent box at our Iconic Wankhede stadium. Today, we gave him a tour of the proposed box which will be formally assigned on March 9 when we felicitate the Indian legend on completing 50 years since making his international debut,” MCA president Vijay Patil told the Times Of India on Saturday.
Sunil Gavaskar will be honoured on March 9th at the Wankhede, a day after the scheduled completion of the upcoming 4-match Test series between Indian and England. Gavaskar is likely to be involved in the Test series as a commentator hence this event will take place on 9th March.
Virat Kohli’s side is set to host Joe Root’s team – the first Test will commence on 5th February in Chennai.
