Legendary India batsman Sunil Gavaskar was not happy with the Indian fans at the Oval and slammed them for disrespecting the Indian tricolor flag while cheering for the national team at the venue, where they registered a massive 157-run win to go 2-1 up in the series.
Indian team believed and made it possible despite England openers added 100 runs as the hosts tried to chase 368 runs to win on the final day. Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed both scored half-centuries and Joe Root made 36, but Indian bowling unit came together to bowl them out.
Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets each in the second session to leave England staring at a defeat and when Shardul Thakur bowled Joe Root, it was a matter of time India won the Test in what has been termed one of the best comeback victories, especially after Virat Kohli and co. were bowled out for 191 runs in the 1st innings.
No Matter How Big A Fan You Are, Do Not Deface The National Flag: Sunil Gavaskar
The Indian fans at the Oval loudly and proudly supported Kohli and his men as they made history by winning only their second Test at the venue, which came after 50 years of their maiden win in 1971. The fans made more noise and chanted for Indian team than the England supporters who watched their team falter a big advantage in the first innings and then losing the match.
However, during that cheering and chanting, Sunil Gavaskar spotted that in a section of fans, who were carrying a huge Indian flag, something was written on the flag. This is a huge disrespect to any national flag and especially to the India tricolor and the former India captain was not happy and it showed in his comments on-air.
“No matter how big a fan you are, do not deface the National Flag. That is how it has been, that is how it should remain,” a bemused Sunil Gavaskar slammed those fans for defacing the flag.
There are flags and then there are Flags. Sure the India supporters who came to the Oval in their thousands will enjoy this evening. I've seen many England batting collapses but I think we might need to give some credit to India's bowlers. pic.twitter.com/5aosS4D6JJ

While Rohit Sharma was named Man of the Match for his second innings’ 127, Sunil Gavaskar praised the real hero of the match, Shardul Thakur. Thakur hit twin half-centuries in the Test and picked three wickets, including that of Joe Root in the second innings.
“Look, at the moment… everything he touches is turning into gold. I mean, some of the shots he played were glorious… the thumping six, the straight drive. They were absolutely delightful to watch. And the confidence with which he batted, you could see. And that was most impressive about him,” Gavaskar said on the Sony Sports Network.
India and England will now clash in the fifth and final Test of the series in Old Trafford, Manchester which the hosts need to win to level the series.
