India’s full-time T20I captaincy has put Suryakumar Yadav out of the picture from the ODI cricket for at least now. He was recently appointed the new T20I captain of the Indian cricket team by the BCCI selection committee and won his first series in Sri Lanka.
Suryakumar already enjoyed being T20I captain, having earlier won the series 4-1 against Australia at home as stand-in captain, and now he is on the verge of clean sweeping the ongoing three-match T20I in Sri Lanka as full-time captain. However, his ODI future looks cloudy at the moment.
Aakash Chopra predicts Suryakumar Yadav's omission from Champions Trophy 2025 following ODI snub
In a recent press conference, Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear that Suryakumar is not currently in consideration for India's ODI team. Agarkar revealed that the Indian skipper’s name was even not discussed during the team selection meeting for the upcoming ODI series in Sri Lanka.
With seasonal players like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant making their returns to the ODI squad, it appears that Suryakumar, despite being part of India's 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, has slipped down the selection ladder, as the selectors are building the team for future events.
Adding to the speculation, former India batter Aakash Chopra has predicted that Suryakumar may not make it to the Indian team for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also noted that the stylish batter’s absence from the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour was a clear indication that he is not part of the plans for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.
Aakash Chopra said in a video posted on his YouTube channel: “Suryakumar Yadav was a part of the team that reached the final of the last (2023 ODI) World Cup. He was part of this (2024 T20) World Cup as well, the David Miller catch he took, but he is now not part of the ODI team.”
Chopra added, “A question was asked about that, and he said that Suryakumar Yadav is a phenomenal and special player, but he will be seen playing in T20Is only and is currently not being considered in ODIs. So, if he is not being considered and the Champions Trophy is about to come, you can assume that Suryakumar Yadav won't be seen there.”
Shubman Gill will play in Champions Trophy 2025: Aakash Chopra
However, Chopra is confident that Shubman Gill will be included in India’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, saying his appointment as vice-captain for the ODI format further boosted his chances of making the cut for the tournament after missing the T20 World Cup 2024.
Chopra signed off by saying, “However, Shubman Gill will be seen there. He (Agarkar) said that he (Gill) is a three-format player, and Gautam (Gambhir) believes it's not a bad thing if he can get three-format players. They have also liked his captaincy in the IPL and against Zimbabwe, and that's why he has been made the ODI vice-captain.”
