India National Cricket Team T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has taken back his words a few days after hilariously trolling Abhishek Sharma over his slow knock in the 4th T20I against the Australia National Cricket Team.
Team India recently ended their Australia tour, which consisted of a three-match ODI series and a five-match T20I series. They lost the ODI series 1-2 but won the T20Is 2-1.
Suryakumar Yadav trolled Abhishek Sharma after the 4th T20I
The swashbuckling opener Abhishek Sharma is known for playing ultra-aggressive cricket for India while opening the innings in T20I cricket, and he has done that consistently.
His aggressive style of batting has brought him immense success, and his career strike rate currently stands at 189.51, which shows how dangerous he can be.
However, in the fourth T20I in Carrara, Abhishek was unable to maintain a high strike rate. He finished his innings with a strike rate of 133.33 as he scored 28 runs off 21 balls, with three fours and one six.
This was one of the slowest innings played. Abhishek and Suryakumar playfully trolled him after the game, saying, "Kabhi dekha hai sher ko ghaas khaate hue? (Have you ever seen a lion eating grass?). Aaj sher ghaas khaa rha thaa dheere dheere karke, (Today, the lion was eating grass — slowly, bit by bit)."
Kabhi kabhi sher ghaas bhi khaa le toh chalega - Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav has now taken a U-turn on his trolling after Abhishek Sharma clinched the Player of the Series award against Australia. He first lauded Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill for their brilliant partnerships and added that it's okay if sometimes the lion (Abhishek) turns herbivorous. He said:
"If the wicket is difficult, the quicker you adapt the better it is. The wicket was good today so they went back to normal, scoring 50-plus in four-and-a-half overs. But it was important in the last game to read the wicket well. These two [Abhishek and opening partner Shubman Gill] did that well. At this level, you only learn from experience. The way he adapted so quickly, if in the future also if we get such a wicket in the subcontinent, it won't be something new for him.
"They communicate well. They run well. They are learning quickly. Yes, there are just 120 balls, but often you have more time than you think. Sometimes if they take four-five balls extra to figure out the conditions, they are so skilled they can cover up easily. Aur Kabhi kabhi sher ghaas bhi khaa le toh chalega (If the lion eats grass sometimes, it's fine, [laughs])," Suryakumar Yadav added.
As an opening batter, it's very easy for you to understand your role - Abhishek Sharma
At the post-match press conference, Abhishek Sharma credited captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir for filling him with confidence by providing him with great backing. He said:
"I knew there's gonna be extra bounce and pace, but, from a team point of view, I had a plan that I have to play the same way I've been playing. Because as an opening batter, it's very easy for you to understand your role.
"But I feel when you're playing like this, when you want to dominate the opposition, you have to have that confidence and that ability. I think the captain and coach always backed me in that. I practised really hard on this because it's not easy to come to Australia and beat them in white-ball cricket as well. So I wanted to play the same brand of cricket because we have been following that since before the Asia Cup."
