Former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh criticized the Suryakumar Yadav-led team for their overconfidence in the T20 World Cup 2026 match against the USA. Ramesh stated that the Men in Blue failed to use their full batting potential during the opener at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, February 7.
India suffered a collapse after Abhishek Sharma perished for a golden duck. Ishan Kishan was dismissed cheaply, leaving the innings in trouble early. The side slipped to 46 for 4 by the end of the powerplay and then slid to an embarrassing 77 for 6 in the 13th over.
Notably, it was the lowest total at home in nearly nine years at which India had lost so many wickets, as several batters played big shots and were caught inside the circle or in the deep.
It Was Purely Overconfidence - Sadagoppan Ramesh Slams Suryakumar Yadav’s Team
Sadagoppan Ramesh stated that the team failed to bat to their potential. Ramesh blamed overconfidence for the poor display and added that reputation alone cannot win matches. He said that while the batting let the team down, the bowlers helped the team win.
"India did not bat to their potential. But the bowlers righted the wrong of the batters. It was purely overconfidence that led to India's disappointing batting. Even if you are a lion with the bat, you can't expect the opponent to just surrender to you. To conquer, you have to put in some effort," Ramesh said on his YouTube channel.
India Have to Put in the Proper Effort - Sadagoppan Ramesh
Ramesh urged the Suryakumar Yadav-led side to stay grounded during the T20 World Cup. He said India have immense talent but must play with discipline. Ramesh warned that underestimating opponents could be India’s biggest risk in the tournament.
"Despite boasting incredible talent, India have to put in the proper effort without overdoing anything. It's important that India doesn't underestimate any team," Ramesh opined.
"If at all India slip in this World Cup, that will be the reason. But it's good that they received a wake-up call in the very first game. India will be careful from now on, as we saw already with the ball."
Without Suryakumar Yadav, India Might Have Lost - Sadagoppan Ramesh
Sadagoppan Ramesh stated that Suryakumar Yadav’s innings changed the match in India’s favour. Ramesh pointed out that Suryakumar built his innings patiently before accelerating at the right time, which helped India reach a total of 160.
“India have dominated many sides recently, but today the tables turned. Without Suryakumar’s calm and attacking knock, India might have lost. His slow start and late acceleration pushed the total to 160. If a key catch had gone the other way, 160 would have been out of reach.”
Suryakumar Yadav scored an unbeaten 84 off 49 balls to lift the team to 161 for 9 in 20 overs. The bowlers then restricted the USA to 132 for 8, sealing a comfortable 29-run win.
Suryakumar’s innings helped India extend their winning streak in T20 World Cups to a record nine matches, and the Men in Blue will aim to make it 10 in a row when they face Namibia in Delhi on February 12.
