VVS Laxman was effusive in his praises for Suryakumar Yadav, and despite the batsman having played just 3 T20Is – and batted in 2 innings – so far, the former cricketer sees him as a guaranteed spot in India‘s squad for the T20 World Cup.
Yadav had a thunderous start to his international career in the home series against England as he smashed 89 runs – in knocks of 57 and 32 – at a strike rate of 185.41.
While he is still young in international cricket, the 30-year-old has loads of experience in domestic cricket, A cricket, and is a proven IPL stalwart playing a significant role in Mumbai Indians’ last couple of IPL title wins.
He is now on the Sri Lanka tour with the side for 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is; VVS Laxman hoped he plays in all the matches and gains more match-time and confidence before the T20 World Cup later in the year in the UAE.
“This is a great opportunity. I just want him [Yadav] to play all the 6 matches, 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is because he is someone who can definitely walk into the T20 World Cup squad, as far as I am concerned,” VVS Laxman said while speaking to Star Sports.
“So I just want him to go and gain the confidence of scoring runs even at the international level,” he added.
His six against Archer shows his confidence and skill: VVS Laxman
Along with Suryakumar, Ishan Kishan also made his T20I debut and sparkled with a match-winning fifty.
VVS Laxman remembers Suryakumar’s first-ball six to Jofra Archer – the right-hander half-pulled a short delivery at high pace from Archer for a thunderous six over fine leg. The 46-year-old former batsman says that shot was an indication of Yadav’s confidence and skill-set.
“Both of them [Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan] capitalized those opportunities. I was really excited the way Suryakumar Yadav batted at No.3. The kind of freedom, the first scoring shot in international cricket and that too against a quality fast bowler like Jofra Archer, to hit him for a six over fine-leg shows the kind of confidence and the skill and the talent he possesses,” he further eulogised Yadav.
