The Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in the T20I format, holds massive significance as it serves as a dress rehearsal for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The official squad for the tournament is expected to be announced in the third week of August, and Suryakumar is now aiming to make the cut.
India prepare for plan B if Suryakumar Yadav misses out
However, if Suryakumar fails to recover in time, India may have to consider alternate leadership. The Indian selectors have options like Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, and even Sanju Samson as potential stand-ins. But for now, the Indian cricket team management is hoping their captain can take the field at full fitness in the subcontinental tournament.

Recently, Suryakumar pulled out of the Duleep Trophy 2025 to focus on this recovery. Since then, the Indian skipper has been focused on strength-building, mobility training, and regaining match fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
Suryakumar Yadav eyes hat-trick of records in Asia Cup 2025
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav is on the brink of rewriting T20I history during the Asia Cup 2025. With 2,598 runs at a strike rate of 167.07, he is just 402 runs away from becoming the first batter ever to reach 3,000 T20I runs while maintaining a strike rate above 160.
The Indian skipper might have up to seven innings in the tournament to achieve this rare feat. He will also have the chance to get the most T20I centuries in the tournament next month. Suryakumar now just needs one more T20I century to equal Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell’s joint record of five.
He is all but certain to leave Maxwell and Rohit behind in the upcoming Asia Cup. There is also a six-hitting milestone in SKY’s sight. With 146 sixes already to his name, Suryakumar is just four sixes away from becoming the fifth player in history to hit 150 T20I sixes. If he gets going early, he could achieve this milestone in the first game in the tournament.
